Publisher's summary

One dark December night in a small seaside town, a little girl is found abandoned. When her mother finally arrives, authorities release the pair, believing it to be an innocent case of a toddler running off.

Gregor, a seemingly single man, is found bludgeoned and left for dead in his apartment, but the discovery of children's toys raises more questions than answers. Every night, Ruby gazes into Gregor’s apartment, leading to the discovery of his secret family: his unusually silent daughter and his mentally unstable wife, Constance, who insists that she is descended from the mythological selkies. She begs Ruby to aid in finding the sealskin that Gregor has hidden from her, making it impossible to return to her people.

DS Joanna Harper's investigation into Gregor’s assault leads her to CCTV footage of the mother-daughter pair from town. Harper realizes she knows the woman almost as well as she knows herself: It's her estranged daughter, Ruby. No matter the depth of Ruby’s involvement, she knows she will choose her daughter over her career. Steeped in local legend and exploring the depths of what it means to be a mother, Melanie Golding's newest novel is a lyrical and atmospheric folktale for the modern age.

absolutely fabulous story. beautifully written.

no major plot holes. evocative. intriguing. would love to see this in movie form. the narration is hit and miss. it was ok for the most part, but many of the male characters just sounded like they had a bad cold. i know that there are tons of British accents depending on the region, but I found this one annoying, especially because Joanna's accent in the first book was so different. but overall, a great listening experience.

Great story

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The narrator was good, however her child’s voice made me cringe a lot in the beginning but as the story progressed, it got slightly more tolerable.

Love Melanie Golding!

I loved Little Darlings and was waiting for this book to come out. The mix of fairy tale/myths/crime/thriller is my jam. Can't wait for more from this author!!!

Fascinating link to mystical beings

Makes me want to research the quoted material. Very twisty-turny for a while. Suspenseful moments and odd psychological questions. And entertaining.!

Another great Melanie Golding novel

Not as creepy as Little Darlings, but again we are treated to modernized myth and legend, centered around the sea and folk tales of creatures from other worlds. I’m not usually drawn to genres like this, but Golding weaves modern characters and ancient myths together so seamlessly that I’m always left captivated. She’s now become a favorite author for sure.

interesting mythological thriller

“The Hidden”, by Melanie Golding, is an eerie story with dark undertones.

I listened to it on audiobook. The narrator, Penelope Rawlins, drew me into the book with her tone and accents. Her toddler voice, Leonie, impressed me the most.

“The Hidden” is told in various points of view, with a then/ now timeline that flowed well. Background that was important to the story came from the past timelines. “The Hidden” is a mystery with Celtic mythological folklore

Golding weaves just enough mythology into the novel to pique the reader's interest. I needed to know more. After talking to Marcy, I sat down and googled everything.

If you are looking for a fast-paced thriller, this is not for you. There are moments that the book slows down and lingers in the lives of the characters. Just go with it. The two distinct storylines connect in the most fascinating way.

After finishing “The Hidden”, I started listening to the prequel, “Little Darlings”
