Publisher's summary

“This delicious combination of Clue and The Great British Bake Off kept me turning the pages all night!” —Janet Evanovich, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Only Murders in the Building meets The Maid in this darkly beguiling locked-room mystery where someone turns up dead on the set of TV’s hottest baking competition—perfect for fans of Nita Prose, Richard Osman, and Anthony Horowitz.

Every summer for the past ten years, six awe-struck bakers have descended on the grounds of Grafton, the leafy and imposing Vermont estate that is not only the filming site for “Bake Week” but also the childhood home of the show’s famous host, celebrated baker Betsy Martin.

The author of numerous bestselling cookbooks and hailed as “America’s Grandmother,” Betsy Martin isn’t as warm off-screen as on, though no one needs to know that but her. She has always demanded perfection, and gotten it with a smile, but this year something is off. As the baking competition commences, things begin to go awry. At first, it’s merely sabotage—sugar replaced with salt, a burner turned to high—but when a body is discovered, everyone is a suspect.

A sharp and suspenseful thriller for mystery buffs and avid bakers alike, The Golden Spoon is a brilliant puzzle filled with shocking twists and turns that will keep you reading late into the night until you turn the very last page of this incredible debut.

Middle of the road

This book was ok. I mainly liked it because I’m a huge fan of the Great British Baking show but I agree with other reviews that have said the author doesn’t really get what is so great about that show. It was entertaining enough though I wouldn’t recommend it as a top pick.

Skip it!

I was looking forward to this book but the narration is horrific, really had to force myself to finish it!

Predictable but readable

Good for a beach read or casual readers. The audio was ok. The characters were not super likable, but there were a couple redeemable people.

Pretty obvious - still enjoyable

What a great premise squandered! Plot Threads left hanging. Wispy Characters. Obvious machinations. BUT a mystery all the same that I leaned into enjoying because I miss these kinds of books. Ah for the return of Agatha - this story would have been handled brilliantly .

solid c almost gave up but had chores and

couldn't be bothered.
inconsistent writing across characters
formulaic characters and plot points
tissue thin characters designed to suit the plot too perfectly.
the voice artist speaking 'Stella' im sorry to say but no. just no. editors and techs are doing you a disservice not telling you that your pseudo mid atlantic over pronunciation is nauseatingly hard to hear. seasickness from the weird effect of whatever's going on with that wanna be amy adams in enchanted 'theatrical' exaggeration of consonants it DOES NOT WORK! STOP IT! it literally hurts to hear.

3.5 stars

As a fan of GBBO, you will catch all of the Lingo and references. The mystery part is just ok. I found a couple of the characters voices/cadence annoying. Having said all of that, it is a light and easy listen.

Definitely a must read for fans of bake-off..

Really fantastic listen, cast was fantastic. Main issue is with the story — definitely feel like the ending was a bit of a fumble. 4.25 stars.
