Publisher's summary

A stray dog leads bookseller Penelope McClure and her gumshoe ghost on a chase for a clever killer in this brand-new entry in the "utterly charming" (Mystery Scene) Haunted Bookshop Mysteries from New York Times bestselling author Cleo Coyle.

Pet Mystery Week brings brisk business to Penelope's Rhode Island bookshop, but a real mystery comes barking at her door when a lost dog turns up in a panic. Pen and her son Spencer follow the furry fugitive to a wooded area where the dog's owner lies unconscious. Mrs. Cunningham is a warm-hearted widow who volunteers at the animal shelter and runs Buy the Book's pet lovers book club. Why would anyone shoot such a sweet soul?

The police believe it's an accident, a shot by a careless deer hunter, but Pen remains skeptical. To straighten out this doggone mess, she whistles for the ghost of PI Jack Shepard, an expert in hounding as well as haunting. Jack has a dog story of his own, a case from the 1940s that may help Pen sniff out clues to her present predicament. Yet even with Jack's hard-boiled help, Pen may not be able to stop the killer from striking again or letting this whole case go to the dogs . . .

Fun as usual

I do enjoy these stories. Jack the ghost is a trip. The trouble Penny gets herself into is a little much sometimes, but I do love Quindicott.

Jack and Pen do it again

Love this series! My only complaint is it was over too soon! I look forward to the next installment. And I love everything Cleo writes.

I love Cleo Coyle’s books but …

I’ve heard all her books in both series. I love them all except this one. I found it. Forced slow. Please return back to the old reader. Didn’t like the voices. Many voices were fake. How can you make an 80 pound dog sound like a lapdog? Glad I read it looking for a new infusion with no characters and new situation. It was like reading the last year of a TV series. That was great.

Renewing my crush on Jack Shepherd

This is one of my most favorite series. I started a re-read as a listen a few months ago in preparation for listening to this one. I enjoyed getting reacquainted with Pen, Sadie, Seymour, Spencer and the gang. I especially enjoyed my time with my fiction ghost-boyfriend, Jack Shepherd. He's a sweetie with a lot of rough edges. I like the relationship he and Pen have on helping in the present and the past via Pen's dreams that Jack helps build.
This book was intricate in the mystery and relationships. It still felt natural that Pen and Jack became involved in the investigation since the cops don't seem to be moving very fast plus it's book #9 and the human and the specter have been investigating since the beginning. Pen's learned to trust her instincts and get more brave in her questioning.
ps...Jack likes dogs. Another checkmark next to why I like Jack so much.
I can absolutely recommend this book, series and author. if you get a chance, listen to the series. It's pretty nifty.

Love story still don’t love new narrator

Sorry but when I think Pen McCIure, I think Caroline Shaffer. The story is good and I love a good puppy mystery…but yeah. The narrator is not my favorite.
