Publisher's summary

The Awakening Land trilogy traces the transformation of a middle-American landscape from wilderness to farmland to the site of modern industrial civilization, all in the lifetime of one character. The trilogy earned author Conrad Richter immense acclaim, ranking him with the greatest of American mid-century novelists. It includes The Trees (1940), The Fields (1946), and The Town (1950) and follows the varied fortunes of Sayward Luckett and her family in southeastern Ohio.

The Fields tells the story of Sayward as a wife and mother, working with her own brood on that hard frontier to create a durable home, and aspects of civilization in a region where life is still difficult and towns are just beginning to appear. It is a rich and human novel about personal conflicts and strife in the midst of a land that itself is striving. And it has an epic quality that perfectly reflects the sweeping conquest of the frontier.

Great reading of a great classic

The Reader’s voice matched the storyline perfectly. Richter’s trilogy may not be the most exciting of stories, but in its own way, it actually is exciting - the growth from first home of settling in Ohio.
Such amazingly hard lives, doing 100% for themselves, it’s hard to imagine. Yet these people made us the country we are today. The Reader did a really good job of matching up the different word uses of that time, and it was easy to understand and “translate” to today’s language. “I’m glad I wasn’t a pioneer woman,” my mother always said. Yet Sayward stands up to her tough times and makes the best of what she has, always. We could all learn something from listening to this book. Great job, Reader! Can’t wait for the 3rd and final installment of “The Town.”

great story disappointing narrator

loved the story. Following Sayward and seeing the land transform through her story was inspiring.
Narrator was disappointing. He seemed to rush the reading. Mispronounced several words. Felt like the story should have been told with a woman's voice. Still loved it.

Good as the first!

I'm officially off to the third book! I loved this movie as a child but I can't express how different and better the books are.

Enthralling tale of life in the new land

The continuation of Sayward's story , brings out her humanity and strength of spirit as it shiwcases her physical strength and determination.
Nothing stays the same.Changes come to all, some welcomed snd some heart wrenching.
This tale of a young Woodsie Woman has great relevence even today.
Danny Campbell 8s a good atory teller, and dies an excelent job of not only telling the tale, but conveying the ambiance of the time, and the humanity of the people.
