Publisher's summary

In August 1914, renowned explorer Ernest Shackleton and a crew of 27 set sail for the South Atlantic in pursuit of the last unclaimed prize in the history of exploration: the first crossing on foot of the Antarctic continent. They came with in 85 miles of their destination when their ship, Endurance, was trapped fast in the ice pack, and the crew was stranded on the floes. Their ordeal lasted for 20 grueling months, and the group made two near-fatal attempts to escape by open boat before they were finally rescued.

Drawing upon previously unavailable sources, Caroline Alexander gives us a riveting account of Shackleton's expedition. An extraordinary re-creation of the terrible beauty of Antarctica, the awful destruction of the ship, and the crew's heroic daily struggle for survival, The Endurance thrillingly describes one of the last great adventures in the brave age of exploration, perhaps the greatest of them all.

Wonderful Story - Listen To Others As Well

I listened to 'Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage' before listening to this. Both are great, however 'Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage' tells the story in a bit more detail. This book does a better job with the ending and what happens to the voyagers. I recommend them both, however if you can listen to only one, choose Shackleton's Incredible Voyage.

Courage, leadership and brotherhood

The return to Elephant Island

Which scene was your favorite?

When near the end of the journey back, the final three men, worn, frozen and starving, locked legs and slid down the icy slope!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely! An excellent telling of the incredible expedition.

Any additional comments?

Exceptional voice work!

Endurance

I had read "South" prior to this. Together I feel I have a complete view of there dire situation. Very hard to stop listening, somedays I had to take the "long" way home.

The Endurance; book & narration

The book starts out somewhat confusing with history facts presented in a confusing manner. Once that format is overcome, the book’s story is EXCELLENT (with a some “typos” & grammar errors not corrected).
The narration does not follow the text many times throughout the book-VERY distracting!
In all, these “technical” issues are annoying; seems as though the book & narration were “rushed” and not carefully edited

Inspiring true story

I was riveted until the end. Well read and such an incredible story of endurance. Made me want to research the story more and I have read other leadership books inspired by the leadership principles practiced by Shakleton.

Memorable story

A memorable story with lots of characters. I struggled to keep each character's history straight, but otherwise enjoyed this book.

Truly Inspiring

The wonderful story of Shackleton, read and performed impeccably.

A story of leadership, adventure and humanity, I enjoyed every minute.

The only frustration was missing the wonderful pictures I imagine are in the printed version.

There has never been a more harrowing tale

An incredible adventure and survival story a "must listen". The hardship described in these pages defies words.

Doesn't line up with the text edition very well

Wonderful story. But the audio does not pair well with the text of the exact same book. Narrator leaves out whole paragraphs and reads sentences, mostly quotes, in different order than as written.
