Publisher's summary

The year was 1915. Equipment and food supplies were totally inadequate. After battling its way for six weeks through thousands of miles of pack ice and located only a day's sail from its destination, the Endurance became locked inside an island of ice. Yet Ernest Shackleton enabled all 27 of his men to survive for over a year on the ice-bound Antarctic seas - leadership without equal. This gripping account is based on contemporaneous diaries and interviews conducted by the author with these exceptional men.

When boats were made of wood, and men were made of steel.

First, the reader is very good with voice pitching to the moments in the book! Following the adventure of Shackleton and his crew aboard the Endurance and more, was utterly exhilarating and awe striking. Much more details and accomplishments than I had learned from any other documentary. What a feet to survive! If you like adventure and can appreciate the efforts of exploration, sailing and mountaineering this story is for you.

An incredible journey

this is a story about an incredible journey undertaken by men in the early 20th century. this journey was to an Uncharted location in the world without the benefit of modern day electronic navigation equipment. this would be considered a dangerous Expedition in modern times let alone in an arrow where meals were cooked after they were hunted basic plain stoves. ecru of approximately 30 men undertake this adventure in each of them survived the 17-month ordeal despite one let down after another and their life being on the line minute after minute. an exciting book to listen to for anyone

Exciting Story about Shackleton and His Crew

This was a great audiobook. Performance was ok. Sound quality a bit off. Might like to read the actual hard cooy.

A narrative that men must hear and reflect on

Grit. Toughness. Resiliency. Perseverance. Our soft society is starving for character traits that were thriving during this extreme expedition. Men of our time would do well to reflect on this book. And even soul search.

Incredible performance, I forgot it wasn't fiction

** Some spoilers ahead, but it is a historical event so I assume most people know the overall outcome**

After the discovery of the endurance this year, I wanted to refamiliarize myself with the story of Ernest Shackleton and his incredible voyage. Their story is riveting and difficult to imagine oneself braving the conditions the crew experienced. The performance by Tim Pigott-Smith was so good, I forgot a number of times that this was not a fiction novel. Alongside the crew I felt both their hope and despair in various moments. The way the story was put together utilizing journal entries and crew records made it so complete that it was a truly immersive experience. Though I knew the outcome, I still found myself hopefully anticipating their rescue and felt the frustration alongside Shackleton that it took so long to get back to rescue his crew. What an incredible leader Shackleton must have been, to take so many souls into his hands and return them all home alive. The length of this book was perfect, I finished it in about a work day. The tempo of the story was quick enough to keep me engaged and yet drawn out enough to enjoy the delicious details of the journey. If you are looking for a refresher on the Edurance, and her excursion to the sea floor, this book should give you everything you want and more.

Awe inspiring

As a Navy and Coast Guard boatswain mate (veteran of 32years) I found this account incredible. All odds were against the survival of any of them much less all of them.
