Publisher's summary

International sex researcher, neuroscientist, and columnist Debra Soh debunks popular gender myths in this scientific examination of the many facets of gender identity that “is not only eminently reasonable and beautifully-written, it is brave and vital” (Ben Shapiro, number-one New York Times best-selling author).

Is our gender something we’re born with, or are we conditioned by society? In The End of Gender, neuroscientist and sexologist Dr. Debra Soh uses a research-based approach to address this hot-button topic, unmasking popular misconceptions about the nature vs. nurture debate and exploring what it means to be a woman or a man in today’s society.

Both scientific and objective, and drawing on original research and carefully conducted interviews, Soh tackles a wide range of issues, such as gender-neutral parenting, gender dysphoric children, and the neuroscience of being transgender. She debates today’s accepted notion that gender is a social construct and a spectrum, and challenges the idea that there is no difference between how male and female brains operate.

The End of Gender is conversation-starting “required reading” (Eric R. Weinstein, PhD, host of The Portal) that will arm you with the facts you need to come to your own conclusions about gender identity and its place in the world today.

Don’t go in expecting your views to stay the same

I am so grateful to Dr. Soh for having the courage to write this book. I was astounded by her combination of empathy and integrity. She made me examine my prejudices and nuance my views. I came out of this read with an appreciation for how science—and truth—are indispensable for citizenship and justice.

There is no reason we can’t support feminism and trans people while acknowledging differences between the sexes. Trans people are no less legitimate if we don’t pretend that gender is a spectrum. The truth is actually more affirming, not less.

Ideology isn’t the way to the good life and the just city, but truth and compassion are.

Audio issues

Having listen to Dr. Soh on Rogan made me interested in this book. The book is great but the audio was not mixed well. The audio was so much better on Rogan. This is not the first book of a female narrator that I had to listen to from Audible at 1.1x speed to increase quality.

Brilliant and brave

Hats off to Debra Soh. If science is eventually rescued in western society, it will be due to the work of people like her.

It’s so important to follow the science

I bought this book as I’ve been feeling more and more uncomfortable with everything I see and hear about transgender issues, especially concerning children and the destruction of women’s sport. I have a very good friend who’s trans so I wanted to understand the science in order to understand my discomfort and better help her. This book cleverly walked me through all the issues and explained the science and reasons for the lack of public debate behind each point. The discussion on gender was fascinating. It also highlighted the issues trans people face and how society is unfortunately being forced to follow political correctness and not science, which ultimately benefits neither those who are trans, or society. I now understand why I’m so uncomfortable with the issues, few are based on science. Thank you.

A very informative book

This book explored popular ideas that are also taboo, without forcing thoughts on me. A must read.

Intelligent common sense

it's hard to believe we have come to a point in history where is seems society needs such a work. Dr. Soh is insightful and a deep sense of compassion for a community so misunderstood. it truly opened my eyes to the dangers of political correctness in ideolactivism that has plagued the world with nonsense. Highly recommended.

Science has entered that chat.

Finally. A fair common-sense common-language non-ideological scientific explanation of sex and gender.

Clears up a lot

Dr. Soh scientific approach reigned supreme while guiding us through a subject often muddied by emotion. Her passion is apparent, but overpowering.

As a father of young daughter, thank for educating me.
