Publisher's summary

When Avery Hansen awakens, it's not to the warmth of her bed, but to the sterile white walls of an unfamiliar hospital room. Her mind races with fragments of the night before—a gathering of girlfriends at the local bar, laughter echoing in the air amid clinking glasses and upbeat chatter—now drowned by the eerie silence and the pungent scent of antiseptic.

Baffled and increasingly scared, Avery pleads with the nurse to let her leave, but all she hears is, 'The Doctor will see you shortly.' The eerie calmness of the woman, who keeps repeating the same phrase, sends shivers down her spine, making her feel more trapped and anxious by the minute. Questions swirled in her mind, but one thing was painfully clear—she was trapped, and the staff showed no signs of letting her leave.Startled to discover she's not alone in the facility, Avery finds other women there, seemingly under the influence of strong medication, behaving contentedly. Puzzled by their altered state and growing increasingly suspicious of the food and medication she's given, Avery questions the true nature of the facility.Following a traumatic event, Avery's dread deepens as she uncovers The Doctor's malevolent plan. Her escape becomes a race against time. Every minute spent behind these walls amplifies her fear—she's sure her life's in jeopardy. With danger lurking at every corner, Avery's only hope is to outsmart The Doctor. But can she break free before becoming a pawn in a sinister game she might not survive?

As a Woman what is your Worst Nightmare?

WHOA! This one took a turn I was not expecting, especially after the opening chapters. Those chapters are raw and emotional, so you are warned, you will get angry at the actions of one character, and feel justified with what happens to them. But hang onto your seats because the story is not exactly what you are expecting as you get into the meat of it.

Dr. Oliver Perritt is the consummate paragon, rich, focused, benevolent, sociopath. His Administrative Assistant Julia is his perfect complement. The devastation they visit on others in their private Hospital is a psychological torment that few would ever want to experience. More than that I will not say, as it would include spoilers, and you want to experience every word and plot for yourself. I highly recommend this book and the audible. The narration is right on the money.

A scary story

This story was very disturbing. The author did a great job creating some dimented characters. When I first started this story I had no idea the story would end up where it did. Poor Oliver had a horrible childhood. The disgusting orphanage that he lived in started him on his twisted journey. His final conversation with the head mistress before leaving was going to be a turning point for him I thought. It was but in a different direction than I thought. Then the story shifted to Avery who got abducted. When she woke she had no idea what hospital she was in. She was under constant guard & soon learned things were going to happen to her and she wouldn't be able to stop them. Oliver thought he was using Avery to help people but Avery knew he was a horrible person. A story that will shock you.

The doctor or the monster?

After years of abuse, Oliver’s life seems to have turned around. Now a well to do doctor and philanthropist, things look rosy on the surface, but abuse takes its toll… now Avery is living the nightmare of his making.

Erica R. Stinson has written a chilling tale. Though slow in a few spots, overall I couldn’t put this book down.

J. Bruce McRell’s narration was very consistent throughout. I didn’t always feel the sense of urgency, but I was definitely entertained.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

Why was I taken?

I really enjoyed this suspenseful book. I listened to
an Audible version from Story Origin. This is my voluntary review.
Oliver has a very abusive childhood in a foster home. He grows up to have serious issues. Avery is kidnapped and wakes up a captive in a hospital. Why? Can she escape? There are others. What is going on? I really couldn't put this down.
I was enjoying the narration. He was easy to understand, nice voice, and read at a perfect pace. Then, as it was getting more and more suspenseful, he didn't get excited or emotional or faster. I feel he could have improved my enjoyment with more emotion.

The making of a psychopath

The book starts in 1968 with a young handicapped boy being abused in an orphanage by the stereotypical matron. Years later young women are disappearing in New York City. Avery goes out with friends after work and disappears from the restroom in a bar. Has she become one of these women? She wakes up chained to the bed in a hospital, told that the doctor will see her soon. Lo and behold the doctor is the same young boy from the orphanage, all grown up and wealthy, a well respected doctor. I enjoyed this book but I wasn't blown away by it. It had a good story line but it was slow in places. I listened to the audiobook. The narrator does a good job in a news reporter way but he could have shown a little more emotion in places. Avery and her boyfriend Josh were good characters. The detectives did not impress me much. The doctor and his staff were appropriately cruel and creepy. The last third of the book really picked up the pace and did grab my attention. The twists in this part were good and I enjoyed the ending. Not a bad book. I received a copy of the audiobook from StoryOrigins.
