Publisher's summary

James Denis gives Captain Lacey a task to deliver a mysterious package to a man with an office near the Custom House on the bank of the Thames. Lacey, who has been drawn into danger delivering items for Denis before, opens the package to find a single chess piece - a white queen.

The piece tells Lacey nothing, but he soon realizes it plays deeply into Denis’s ongoing battle for control of London’s underworld.

Meanwhile, Lacey encounters an old army friend just returned from Antigua who is being accused of smuggling and, possibly, murder. Lacey decides to help the man, whom he considers honorable, to clear his name.

But Lacey is drawn farther into the dark games of James Denis and his rival, until only his wits and memories from his past can save himself and his family from gravest danger.

Book 15 in the Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries series.

These Books Are Interesting All the Way to the End

I really like this series and find a lot of humorous twists and turns. Captain Lacey is a true hero but he does bumble around often. I truly like his character but I equally like Dennis! Can't wait for the next one. Maybe Captain Lacey's daughter will fall in love with Dennis...wouldn't that be a hoot!

Great story. The “reader” is a star, as always.

I can not miss a single installment of this series. What a treasure! Saying more would give too much away.

Love these books

Captain Lacey and crew are so entertaining waiting impatiently for 16 to come to Audible. James Gilles does an excellent job in bringing them all to life.

Great fun series and Great Installment

This is a wonderfully fun series. Captain Lacey is self-deprecating but stops short of being a character you feel sorry for. The mystery murders are clever. The other characters - his love interest, his bodyguard, his rich friend, his actress neighbor, are the best part. The narration is excellent - Gillies has a strong clear voice and does a great job on the various characters' voices. And these stories are not too long - so you can finish it on a road trip or in a week or two of commuting. This is one of the best of the series in how it wraps everything up at the end. A pleasure to listen to and works fine as background music too - you do not have to catch every single word to follow along. Highly recommend.

Excellent!

This one was very intense with murder, mayhem and an enemy’s confrontation that turned into a battle

The narrator is beyond amazing
