Publisher's summary

Shabby and lumbering, with a face like a Norfolk dumpling, Father Brown makes for an improbable super-sleuth. But his innocence is the secret of his success: refusing the scientific method of detection, he adopts instead an approach of simple sympathy, interpreting each crime as a work of art, and each criminal as a man no worse than himself...

Here you will find the complete Father Brown stories in the chronological order of their original publication.

  • The Wisdom of Father Brown Starts at Chapter 13,

Mystery Maven

I hesitated to write this review. I so enjoy these stories, so that is covered. I cannot enjoy Mr. Scalon’s narration. He doesn’t inflect any changes for each character, although he has good diction.

Good but not Great

While GKC is deserving of many accolades, writing not the least, writing murder mysteries are not that which elevates him above the common and on occasion, juvenile and even vulgar. AC Doyle sets the standard, peaks the interest, holds the attention, and leaves the reader desiring more.

Not quite what I was hoping for

I enjoy the series but found the reading rather dry and dull. I guess I just had my heart set on feeling the same enjoyment I do of the TV series.

Worthy of several listens

Excellent narration: various inflections to distinguish characters, as well as specifically identifying them. I couldn't wait to hear the next story (and there are many). There is also humor sprinkled throughout. I know I will listen to each story several times, because they are detailed and involved.

Well done

The performance was well done and the stories great! The American accent is hard to listen to, but I got through it:)

Excellent narration of complete collection of stories

The narration of these justly famous stories is excellent and makes the already interesting and compelling aspects the characters and plots more plain.

Great stories ruined by narrator

This narrator shouts the words at the listener like a drill sergeant, with no wit or charm or twinkle which is needed for these warm stories. Suggest buying a different version.

A great book

A wonderful book that I found to be developmental and maturative for a young man coming of age such as myself. I found this book to be increasingly well written and I found a great relation in the protagonist and myself. I further highly recommend this book.

G. K. Chesterton, a product of his times

The author has his characters use words that were offensive then and are offensive now. While I didn’t keep count of such usages, I remember times when Fr. Brown focused on the person rather than the label. If you are going to read books written as long ago as these were you will sometimes find offensive language that was more acceptable then than it is now. That said, I enjoyed many of the stories and found the narration acceptable but not great. I haven’t seen the TV series so I can make no comparisons. Fr. Brown brings to mind the old TV detective Columbo.
