Publisher's summary

299 Days: The Community, the third book in the 299 Days series, reunites Grant Matson with his family after his wife, children, and in-laws accept that the only way to survive the Collapse is to flee the comfort of their suburban lives and join him at his isolated cabin in the woods. With riots becoming more violent, power outages more widespread, and the military crumbling, Grant and others throughout Washington State realize they must organize if they want to endure. From the secure confines of the relocated state capitol building, to a rural self-sustaining farm, to the developing community of Pierce Point, The Community explores the mental, emotional, and physical changes everyone must make to adapt to a collapsed society. The years of preparing and training position Grant to lead Pierce Point as he begins to navigate complex interpersonal dynamics and unpredictable situations to help build a new community that can withstand the threats closing in on them. Will people join forces or stand alone? Can communities successfully organize themselves in times of chaos? Will what is left of government help those who cannot help themselves? And if so, at what cost?

pretty good if you can mentally suspend reality

The first book starts slow. I actually had to stop listening it was so slow. A few weeks later I decided to try again. After the slow history of the characters, the story gets really good. I was hooked until mid book 3-4. Then it kind of lost me. A week after the collapse (partial collapse), this community is creating a
whole government, including jail, bookkeeping, appointing a judge, etc. Seems a little premature. Also, The Team (group of self trained, tactical sheep dogs) have to audition to be allowed to defend a small cabin community…? Uhhh what? Pretty sure if there was a group of well trained guys willing to defend an area in a collapse, everyone would be thrilled!
But, if you can just suspend reality and enjoy the entertainment, it is pretty good. Plus there’s a ton of books in the series, which is a bonus.
I’m on book 4, I’m going to stick with it and hope it doesn’t get too weird.

Slow but great story

The Going Home series by A American is still my favorite series of all time, but this series is definitely my second favorite. It moves a lot slower, but the story is believable, and keeps you coming back for more.

The Community

Excellent listen, I’m really looking forward to the rest of the series. Practical knowledge and many points that could be useful one day.

Somewhat Dry

This is a great story with complex characters that I would like to have felt more emotion in the reading experience. Still a great read!

Need some motivation?

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this series to anyone who has thought " What if".

Who was your favorite character and why?

I don't have one favorite character but many in the book remind me of people I know.

Which character – as performed by Kevin Pierce – was your favorite?

He does a good job with all the characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The normalcy bias by Grant's wife had me yelling at her! Grant's need to stop intruders into his community gave me pause for thought.

Any additional comments?

Taking a long road trip? Be sure you have 3 or 4 of the series ready to go with you and the miles will fly by.

Loved it. Straight level headed preparedness.

I loved it. a common sense guy telling a common sense story. A good story too, not just informative. I will buy the rest myself and would encourage anyone else to.

sometimes this is so close to the current.

there are times while listening to this book I have to step back and review the current political B.S. to reestablish what is in the book and what is happening in real life. they mirror each other so closely.

I like this series

Not action filled but like a diary read that lays out how it would probably happen.

Mr. Tate does not disappoint with Book 3

Would you listen to The Community again? Why?

Yes, the story is riveting enough to keep me interested several times through.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Grant Matson, I can relate to this character as someone who was forced to "closet prep" until the family got on board.

Which character – as performed by Kevin Pierce – was your favorite?

Grant Matson, I enjoyed the inner monologue by Mr. Pierce. It really added a great dimension to the story for me.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

While I have been a prepper for some time before these books came out, it did make me think about a lot of aspects of prepping that had not occurred to me, i.e. dealing with the Libs etc.

Any additional comments?

One of the many things I love about this series, Book 3 especially, is how there are so many "stories in the story". A lot to be learned from Mr. Tate, especially for newcomers to prepping. Its almost a blueprint for getting started, from food storage to fitness. The strong sense of community that will be needed in times such as these can not be overstated. Well done, Mr. Tate.
