Publisher's summary

Forget Starbucks - there's an entire world of coffee waiting to be discovered.

Around two billion cups of coffee are consumed across the world every day. Second only to crude oil, it’s the world’s largest traded commodity.

The origin of coffee is shrouded in legend, and no one knows for sure exactly how it was discovered (although its discovery is largely attributed to a herd of energetic Ethiopian goats in AD 850).

It’s little wonder, then, that coffee is so steeped in culture, with a rich history and a complex social and cultural narrative.

In The Coffee Atlas, you’ll learn that there’s a whole world of coffee waiting to be uncovered. You’ll discover:

  • A rich but concise history of the humble coffee bean
  • The difference between "arabica" and "robusta" (and what it is you usually drink)
  • When a cherry isn’t a cherry - and what that has to do with your coffee
  • Crop to cup: a complete understanding of what happened to your coffee beans
  • The complex ethical landscape of the coffee industry - and how you can be sure your cup is as fair and ethical as possible every time
  • Varieties, brewing methods, and preparations - learn the jargon for it all and sound like a pro the next time you order!
  • The real reason one continent consumes far less coffee than it exports
  • Unique and unusual coffee preparations from around the world
  • Why one country refuses to succumb to Starbucks (and why you might want to, too!)
  • Expert tips for preparing high-quality coffee at home every time
  • Bonus! Clear and simple recipes so you can become your household’s favorite barista (no experience necessary)
  • And much more

If you stumble to the coffee machine for your caffeine fix each morning with barely a thought about what you’re drinking (or how it could be better), or if you’re stuck in a pumpkin spice latte rut, it’s time to discover coffee’s oldest secrets.

A cool listen

This was just a fun listen. I am an avid coffee drinker but like most I just drink coffee from day today don’t really know much about it, grab whatever looks good at the store kind of person.

I can honestly say I learned a lot! Just cool to hear the origin and facts about the different kinds and even got some new ideas of things I want to try.

Love this book!

Being a coffee drinker and lover, this book is so interesting and fun! It is fascinating to learn the history of coffee and how it is made from the field to the cup. I especially enjoyed the chapter on Where coffee and attitude mix together like milk and sugar, such a fun read. This book could be a great gift for anyone who is a coffee lover or if they are ready to become their own home barista!

For coffee drinkers and non-drinkers alike…

What a wonderfully enjoyable and informative trip around the coffee world!

Thanks to The Coffee Atlas, I look forward to schooling my “coffee expert” friends with my newly acquired Ph.D. In “Javaology”. The opportunity to become my own barista is even more exciting, thanks to the many tips and recipes shared by author Marcia Abrams.

I can’t wait to listen again!

Great book!

Great information! Rarely do we stop to think about the process before the coffee gets into a cup. After this book, I appreciate the different types, world cultures and am glad some of the best coffee still comes from Africa. It’s true, I’m from Africa and rarely drank coffee but I saw plenty of coffee farms. I drank some Ethiopian coffee which was great, but It wasn’t until I came to North America that I appreciated how Americans love their coffee yet they don’t produce it. Every coffee lover should read this

I'm now a walking coffee encyclopedia

I'm now a walking coffee encyclopedia. There was so much to coffee I had no idea. Was recommended this book and I didn't realize what to expect. However this has honestly been a pleasant listening experience and I am also a habitual traveler and anything that adds to learning about different cultures is a plus for me. Thank you Marci. Morning coffee times at work is about to experience a shift in my dialogue!

Good Book!

I am a coffee drinker, and I don’t even know how they make one of my favorite drinks in the morning. This book though said everything you need to know about coffee. It exposed me to the origin of coffee. I have realized how much different countries love and make their coffees, and most importantly, I can make my recipe. Thanks to the writer of this book. I enjoyed every chapter in this book. This book is worth the investment.
