Publisher's summary

A new space fantasy from Will Wight, the New York Times best-selling author of the Cradle series.

“To survive in this galaxy, you need a wand in one hand and a gun in the other.”

On a little-known planet, Archmage Varic Vallenar casts a grand spell to empower himself with the magical abilities of his alternate selves. The ritual works too well, granting Varic not only the magic but also the memories from six lives.

Including their gruesome deaths.

Now, Varic has power greater than any wizard in galactic history, but he knows that won’t be enough. The enemies he faced in those alternate lives were apocalyptic in scale. Terrors of technology and magic. Nothing that he, or anyone, can defeat.

Sun-eating extra-dimensional insects, shadowy secret organizations, genetically enhanced alien super-soldiers, ruthless megacorporations, and hordes of cyborg undead all lurk in the darkest corners of the galaxy, and Varic knows that any of them can become a world-ending threat at any moment.

All these are beyond any wizard, no matter how many spells he’s mastered or how many interstellar warships he’s rallied to his cause. Hopeless, Varic finds himself trying to preserve what little he can from the coming doom.

Until he hears rumors of a mythical starship, an invincible vessel of heroes made to do battle against galactic threats.

A ship called The Last Horizon.

Great Story and Great Narration

What if, after Luke defeated the empire, instead of making a disappointing sequel trilogy, Luke just flew around the galaxy on more epic quests with all his high level friends. That is what this book is in essence. It has a good plot, great character work, and all around epic space opera vibe. I wouldn’t recommend this book to everyone, but I would certainly recommend it to anyone like myself.

Travis Baldree’s narration is excellent, as well, but you already knew that if you’ve ever heard him speak before.

An Amazing Magic Space Adventure

This book was just amazing, I didn’t want it to stop.

The narrator Travis Baldree does an amazing job giving a lot unique sound and feel to each character he portrays. He really made it feel like I was watching a TV series with his vocal range.

I really enjoyed the story over all. I was expecting a slow burn in this first book like the cradle series but you get launched right into the action with an over powered main character. I was a little off put by this since I enjoy series like cradle where you get to be with the main character every step of the way as he gets stronger but that’s just personal preference and an assumption on my end from his previous series. The setting is just fantastic! I wasn’t sure about the whole magic in space but Will really pulled it off. I will say that it feels like the magic in the story is really over powered when you compare it to the technology shown in the story. Maybe it’s because magic was explained more of how it works and how it can be more versatile then technology. With magic being so useful it makes me wonder why don’t more characters use magic as their main form of combat. It feels like it just outpaces technology so much. The characters are so much fun to watch and hear their back stories and how they think. They are all so unique and different.

And as always what I enjoyed the most is the humor in Will’s books. They never take themselves so seriously where it feels like it’s nothing but doom and gloom. It makes me think that there’s a bit more realistic side of being human where even in the worst circumstances we’ll crack a joke or do something funny to up lift our spirits. And it’s done so naturally by the cast of characters he created. Just great work.

Definitely looking forward to the next book!

Excellent first book to a new series!

As someone who loves Cradle but has more mixed feelings about Will's other books, this one is definitely on the Cradle side of the spectrum. Highly recommended.

Another masterpiece by Will

Loved this book all the way through. I've never been a huge fan of space fantasies, but this Space Wizardry is truly wonderful. As usual, Will Wight has delivered a book that leaves you craving more.

Good story overall, but way too telegraphed

I enjoyed it, and I’m sure it’ll be a good series. The big things in the story were very telegraphed though.

A great start!

I'm looking forward to the future of this series. Varies entire crew is incredibly endearing, I even like the crazy one. Good pacing and a completely different feel from Cradle. I'm hoping I will like this series as much as its predecessor.
