Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

Published a year before her death at the age of 30, Emily Brontë's only novel is set in the wild, bleak Yorkshire Moors. Depicting the relationship of Cathy and Heathcliff, Wuthering Heights creates a world of its own, conceived with an instinct for poetry and for the dark depths of human psychology.

Emily Jane Brontë was born July 30, 1818 at Thornton in Yorkshire. Her father was a minister in the Anglican Church. Emily's mother died in 1821 and her two eldest sisters died in 1825, leaving Emily, her brother and two sisters to be raised by their aunt. In childhood, the daughters were introspective and, having read extensively for entertainment, they began composing a series of stories set in imaginary lands. Later all three daughters were to publish poems and stories. Wuthering Heights, Emily's only novel and one of the most passionately original novels in the English language, was published a year before her death of tuberculosis, December 19, 1847.

Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë

Agnes Grey is a young woman determined to prove to her family that she is mature and able to contribute financially to the household when her father’s investment plan goes awry. Agnes seeks out placements as a governess, and her jobs takes her between wealthy households far from home with unruly children and untidy houses.

Despite her self-perceived independence and maturity, Agnes lives an isolated life that is full of oppressive rules and strictures. Though she is constantly surrounded by people, she has to sacrifice close supportive familial and romantic relationships in her pursuit of her career. The novel follows her journey as she learns that independence is not the most valuable part of life, and as she finds back to her home to build a life among those she loves.

Anne Brontë’s debut novel gives a uniquely first-hand perspective into the isolating and difficult lives that governesses of the time faced through their years of service. The events in the novel have close ties to Anne Brontë’s real experiences as a governess, and it has been suggested that this semi-autobiographical narrative opened readers’ eyes to the unfair and restrictive lives of 19th century governesses. A realistically humanizing story told in beautifully simple prose, Agnes Grey is a delightful Brontë novel that is not to be overlooked.

Cuts off

I was very disappointed in this recording. It cut off ends of chapters and I lost the story thread. I finally gave up. So mad to have wasted my credit on it.

Kept skipping

The only real issue I had with the audiobook was that each chapter seemed to be cut short and often in the middle of a sentence.

Chapters cut off

I see everyone has the same problem. You cannot hear the whole chapters. When will you fix the problem or return credits. I prefer a fix. I have One of the stories, so I know you can fix the problem quickly.

Poor reader

This reader can’t pronounce even the simplest words, let alone French. She says plade for plaid for example.

very badly done

I only got to chapter 20 in Jane Eyre before I had to turn it off. Not only was the narrator annoying in not knowing how to pronounce many of the antiquated words, but the French, while correctly pronounced, sound like it was read by a child, stunted and unnaturally. Worse still several chapters were ended abruptly in mid sentence so that much of the story was missing. I do not recommend this version.

Missing the end of multiple chapters

The ends of several chapters are cut off abruptly. This makes for a negative experience.

Terrible recording

It took me a while to realize that large portions of this book are missing. I was listening to Jane Eyre and at one point a chapter cut off before it seemed that it should be over. The next chapter carried on and I didn't think I missed anything. However somewhere around chapter 24 it seemed I had missed something important. At this point I pulled up the Kindle version of the book and looked at the chapter in writing. Many many pages of very important portions of the book were missing from the recorded version. This was not like an abridged version, It was missing things that were pertinent to the story. I returned this and received credit for it, but I wanted to make other listeners aware.

Missing content, awful French

I started with Jane Eyre. After 3/17 chapters were incomplete, I gave up. Also, her performance of the little girl's French is stilted, unnatural, and robotic.

Recording should be removed from Audible

Do not buy this recording. As others have said, it’s incomplete. Chapters end abruptly without finishing. You miss crucial pieces of the story. Amazon should remove this recording and not sell it, as the product is broken.
