Publisher's summary

Look around.

We are on the brink of catastrophe.

A dystopia of excessive pleasure, comfort, and a false sense of security as to how successful you will be is no longer just a relatable movie scene.

Since birth, you were spoon-fed ideas, beliefs, and routines that program you into the same default path as everyone else. This leads to the same quality of life as everyone else.

It’s no wonder why most people feel anxious, overwhelmed, and have a cloud of meaninglessness hovering over their heads at all times.

Focus is the cure.

But not the narrow focus we associate with deep work and study.

Focus is what separates action from distraction, meaning from meaningless, and success from failure.

Focus is how you conduct your own adventure to stop hurling toward the dead end that was assigned to you by society for their benefit.

This will be a painful journey to find meaning, reinvent yourself, and create your ideal future.

The only thing more painful than seeing what you are capable of is not seeing what you are capable of, and I can’t think of anything more worthwhile to dedicate your life to.

Phenomenal book full of insights

Pacing was really well done, and the writing was great! Lots of very good, thoughtful insights to call yourself (and your lack of focus) out, in the best way possible.

Either an amazing wake up call or a much needed reminder

My only objection to buying this book is that If you’re familiar with dan’s writing, many of the ideas will be very familiar. but this is coming from someone that’s following dan for a very long time.

This book is really really good. It’s very informative and it feels like it should be listened to one chapter a day to really let the words absorb.

If I were to open this book a year ago, it would shock my entire would view in the best way possible. If you think you need a wake up call in your life, this is the book for you.

Best book I’ve listened to in a long time

Dan is very intelligent and has a way of explaining things in a simple and straightforward manner. Thank you for your insight and effort in this book. I listened twice in two days and will listen to this at least once a week until I absorb everything I can. I will also be putting everything into action one day at a time.

A Tao for Modern Life

The Art of Focus reminds me of reading a classic taoist text. The forthright presentation of concepts, tools, and solutions make the very broad and deep topics feel relevant and accessible. Its contents are clearly structured for ongoing reflection and application--the iteration necessary for success as described by the author.

Koe's chapter, titled "The Game", resonated most with me. His framing of the game of life in terms of modern role playing games broadened my perspective. I tend to think of life in terms of chess. His modern example adds layers of depth and makes the concept more dynamic.

Nothing groundbreaking but what you need to hear

If you're like me and have been studying self-development/improvement for over ten years, this book will not be particularly groundbreaking. And that's okay. No idea is new under the sun. But what Dan does is give you multiple ways to think about concepts like purpose and execution. Even though he's giving you ideas on what to do, it doesn't feel prescriptive. It's the friendly reminder that you need. It's the nudge that is reminding you that you're leaving so much on the table and if you haven't been IMPLEMENTING all those books you've read about improving your life, now is the time to do it. All we have in this world is ourselves and the ability to choose. This book is one that makes you think and I appreciate that!
