Publisher's Summary

The New World is a prequel to the award-winning Chaos Walking trilogy, setting the stage for the world we discover in The Knife of Never Letting Go, The Ask and the Answer, and Monsters of Men. The story was written while the author served as writer in residence for the Booktrust an independent UK-wide charity dedicated to encouraging people of all ages and cultures to enjoy books.

The New World tells of Viola's journey to the New World, brilliantly capturing the hope and fear of settlers in search of a new life. Patrick Ness says that he wrote it "as a huge and deeply-felt thank you to readers. I've had so many questions about Viola and what her life was like before that I couldn't resist the opportunity to reveal just a little bit extra. I knew these things - they're vitally important to her as a character, even if they're not directly in the novels - so it felt like a secret trip I could take readers on. The challenge was to make it work on its own, too, so anyone could read it. That was really, really good fun, and I hope the final result is an exciting one."

The New World can be listened to before or after the trilogy – and some may choose to do both. The story works as a standalone piece, but listeners already familiar with The Knife of Never Letting Go will learn more about Viola’s life and the events leading to her arrival and first encounter with Todd, while newcomers to the trilogy will discover a white-knuckle ride of an introduction to the series. Whether you're a new or faithful listener, though, it's a welcome chance to immerse yourself in the world of Chaos Walking.

Listen to more Chaos Walking.

Wow!.. What an exciting start. If THE NEW WORLD is truly a good representation of what’s to come in the Chaos Walking Trilogy, then I’m excited to jump into the series and find out what the future holds for Viola.

Would you try another book from Patrick Ness and/or Angela Dawe?

    I think I should .. or would.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The story was a bit dragged out but all in all, I found it a nice listen. I don't like whinny children whose parents are doing the best they can to make a better life for everyone as a whole.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Angela Dawe?

Yes ... she sounded youthful, ambitious and had nice pacing.

Was The New World: Prequel to the Chaos Walking Trilogy worth the listening time?

It was just a bit 'slow' ... but that doesn't mean it wasn't good.

    "Interesting prequel!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

    Yes, so far.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The New World: Prequel to the Chaos Walking Trilogy?

The landing of the ship. This sample really got me interested in listening to the book. It was exciting and funny in spots too.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, probably not. I usually don't want to listen to a book in one sitting unless it's a veyr short book, maybe a novella. I like to anticipate the next session.

    Any additional comments?

I've just gotta see what comes next.

"Okay read - just too short for me, but...."

It was meant to be a teaser, and it does that well. Yes, I will consider reading and/or listening to the first in the series by this author. I do like sci fi, and this premiss would certainly allow the story line to develop in many different directions.

    "Would love to read more!"

For this book I got both the audiobook and the e-book for FREE! So I got to read and listen at the same time. This was an introduction to the Chaos Walking Trilogy and I like how this story starts. I think I might get the series. I wish there was a little more information about Viola's parents but the story is well put together for a prequel. The narrator did a good job as well.

I had not heard of this series before I downloaded this prequel. After listening to this, I think I will be buying the trilogy. I'm wanting to know what happens next in this series.

My eternal best friend is my husband. I act my shoes size, not my age. I have a love for cartoons of all Disney/Pixar/DreamWorks/CN types. I faithfully serve in the Kid's Ministry at church. Hopelessly addicted to audio books with happy endings.

Have you listened to any of Angela Dawe’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Angela Dawe's voice was the reason I picked up the little free book.

    Any additional comments?

I liked the short little prequel, and it sold me on starting the series. The series is going well, but I am reading the book, so I think #2 in the series I will have to pick up the audio book. The read isn't hard, but a lot of the words are artfully misspelled so that you can feel the juxtaposition of his intelligence, education, and age. Many of his sentences are run on sentences and the reader will most definitely be challenged to read the emotion/panic/action required to pull off the character's emotional run-on(s).

What other book might you compare The New World: Prequel to the Chaos Walking Trilogy to and why?

The story itself sounded a lot like the Across the Universe trilogy by Beth Revis. I've started the Chaos Walking trilogy, and know that it is nit quite the same. However the prequel does have the same feel.

    Any additional comments?

I haven't read the trilogy yet, so this was a good begining. I loved the narrator, she captured the voices well. Excited to read more.
