From the moment she was banished by her father, the king, Princess Maia journeyed to seek sanctuary at Muirwood Abbey, the epicenter of magic and good in the land. Now safe for the first time since her cruel abandonment, Maia must foster uneasy friendships with other girls training to be Ciphers: women who learn to read and engrave tomes of ancient power, despite the laws forbidding them to do so.
As Maia tries to judge whom to trust, she makes a shocking discovery: her destiny is to open the Apse Veil and release trapped spirits from her world. Then she learns that her father is coming to Muirwood Abbey to celebrate the Whitsunday festival - and Maia's estranged husband, whom she was forced to abandon, will join him. Torn between deadly political machinations and unstoppable spiritual forces, Maia must channel unknown powers within herself to save her friends, the abbey, and the entire kingdom of Muirwood.

This book kept my interest and left me wanting to know what happens next. I would like to have seen more character description of the king but at the end I discovered this was not the first book in a series so maybe that happened elsewhere.
I love to read to escape. I like to walk in the stores with a good book, browse the mall on a rainy day and people watch while I listen.
The story continued and did not disappoint.
All of the scenes with Collier her husband. Not mushy but interesting in how he treats her.
How she described her feelings, love which she didn't know, trying not to go to sleep, so full of her emotions this book.
Made me ready for the third and last book, this book answered questions and gave you more questions.
Audiobooks are what keep me going in this life. I read approximately 115-140 books per year not counting my 2nd or 3rd reading of books.
Jeff Wheeler stated in his concluding remarks that the second book of a series is usually his favorite because things slow down a bit and main characters gain more depth. Well, I certainly agree that this book achieved that goal.
In this installment, Princess Mya finally goes to Muirwood Abby to study as a Cipher. Though girls are not allowed to learn how to read, Mya has been able to do so since childhood. She thought that she was the only one in the kingdom, but now she meets many other girls that wish to become mastons and learn to read during the night. We are introduced to the Aldermaston and his wife of Muirwood who immediately connect with Mya. We also get to know Mya's Grandmother the High Seer more in this book. Mya is given a companion who knows about Mya's brand and shadow stains. Through this story, Mya finally begins to have trustworthy people surround and support her mission to become a Maston and open the Apse vail once again.
Yes the characters become fully three dimentional in this book, but there are also character building quotes shared throughout the book. Mya shows us how compassion and meekness are not weakness but great strengths of character. Though safe behind the walls of Muirwood, the adventual confrontation between The king of Comoros and his Princess daughter comes to pass. Mya must pass the Maston test in about six months time or consequences not only for Muirwood abby but the entire Maston order will occur. She must stand up to many people including King Giddion her husband.
Though Mya loves her father she cannot condone his actions. She grieves for her King father and the consequences he will suffer for his choices. I know that this is just a story, but Mya's character qualities are to be emulated. There is great power in forgiveness especially when it is not deserved. There is power in love, peace, mercy, and patience in the midst of struggle, as well as gentle responses in the face of cruelty. All these things are shown and remind me what it truly means to be a Christian. You may disagree with my perspective and that's okay. But this book is wonderful and I will be rereading this one many times in the future.
Listening to the series is such a delightful nail biter because it's so good and frustrating. I could hardly wait for the final chapter so I can figure out what the h*ll is going to happen next... It's better than any soap opera!! The author's writing is so awesome and descriptive and along with the narration of Kate in my mind's eye I'm sitting in a movie theater watching everything unfold...thumbs up...I love the cameo of Leah and Colvin!!
I am a huge fan of the Muirwood books by Jeff Wheeler and Kate Rudd's voice prowess truly brings them to life. After loving Lia in the Legends of Muirwood trilogy so much, I was skeptical I would enjoy Maia as much. Maia has surpassed Lia for me at this point and watching her grace and resilience unfold across such an epic journey is a true pleasure! For a middle book, it is not lacking in adventure and plot-moving events. The twists and turns and expectant characters are constantly turned on their heads; it's delightful to experience.
I would like to praise the author and the narrator of this series, AAA ++ to both of you! This book really helped me to see things in a different light than the first book. I began to see Mia more than just this victim of a horrible situation, but one with a purpose beyond comprehension. I grew to understand and to love some of the characters as I watched them become more of the people that were necessary to promote the changes needed to fulfill the prophecy. I was touched and surprised by the extent of the Princess's compassion. I disagreed with her decision tdesire to do the "right" thing by granting her Father a second chance was a childish decision to hold onto a long lost time in her life that she had hoped would return. Many more would be lost because of her inability to stop him from hurting others. It was a foolish move that will undoubtedly help the third books plot.
This is my third series by this author and I am totally enjoying it as I have been marathoning them! Off to the last one.
what will I do when I've finished all the books? The second book is just as enthralling!
"Captivating heroine,/great story."
