Publisher's summary

The warding has failed, and a powerful ancient magic is disturbed - the Everoot.

Thealos Quickfellow, a Shae from the kingdom of Avisahn, has left his homeland to learn first hand of the threat of the Bandit Rebellion. His life is forever changed when he meets the mysterious Sleepwalker known as Jaerod. For Thealos himself is one of the keys that can open a door to a Silvan artifact which can tame the forbidden side of the Everoot.

As the valley of the kingdoms of Dos-Aralon and Avisahn grows weaker and weaker, the cruel Bandit Rebellion prepares to claim a stronghold in the south. There they will launch a new war by using the Everoot and its power to heal or destroy. Thealos and Jaerod must defy the powers of men, Shae, and other foes to reach the place where the conflict will begin - and where the dangerous Everoot is being harvested. A fortress called Landmoor.

Great story and narration!

It took me a few chapters to get to know and love the characters, but once I did, I couldn't get enough!

I'm so lost

This feels like a second book, like I'm supposed to know what's going on but have no idea. I mean, I'm no literary scholar but I do have a bachelor degree and I feel I have at least average intelligence. This novel made me feel a step behind. I can't imagine I'm the only one. Even the talent of Charles Dickens struggled a bit when having an over abundance of story lines and characters. A little segue would be helpful, something like "our army will attack and take *land/item idk". I don't know who's good and who's bad, who's pretending, what the army actually wants, if they're different cultures, different species, or aliens. Even the names, the curse word is 'ban it' and the army is called 'bandit'. It took forever to figure out its legit called "the bandit army" and not them just cursing the 'ban it army". I finished it because the few sparks of character building mixed with the even toned narrator (who btw cannot do but maybe 3 voice changes so that didn't help with SO many main characters).
I'd skip it or read the book so you can highlight and dog-eared the pages to piece a story line together.

Decent, but hard to start

It was really hard to get into. The characters, while well developed, were just hard to relate with in the beginning. I found myself listening to the first two chapters 3 times in order to connect. Love Jeff Wheeler as an author, but this one was a struggle.

Seemed like a sequel but wasn’t

As Susi said, the beginning left me somewhat feeling that I was missing something. Thealos Quickfellow insists on abandoning Shae tradition by refusing to choose a year of service. He rebels to the point that he is charged with treason. He escapes the Shae kingdom to learn what is happening in the human kingdoms. He is pursued by the Shae equivalent of special forces. He discovers that the Bandit Rebellion has the Everoot, which can tip the balance of power their way.

Thaelos is rebellious, and impulsive charging ahead without analyzing the consequences. He meets a mix of human, Shae, halfbreed, and Druid friends in his search to understand threats to his kingdom and a magic artifact to counteract the everoot. Thaelos is an unlikely hero.

Remarkable

I was not disappointed. Jeff Wheeler has once again kept me on the edge of my seat with the suspense. The narrator was quite awesome with his portrayal of each character.

Disappointed- all around

This book has no heart, characters didn’t grab a hold of you, and the writing wasn’t that great. The whole story was challenging to follow.
