Publisher's summary

One choice can transform you - or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves - and herself - while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable - and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth's much-anticipated second book of the dystopian Divergent series is another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature.

What Does HOME Mean?

The tale picks up with the very next frame of the picture and the action never stops. The growth in the characters is evident, although I do wish Tris would stop bemoaning being just 16.

Continue with the friends you made in Divergent.

I can't stop listening...Roth has topped Divergent

Would you listen to Insurgent again? Why?

I haven't really stopped listening since I bought this book.

I originally found the book on the 7-day loan shelf at the library. I picked it up because I was drawn to the cover. After reading the first paragraph, I realized that this was a sequel and I marched to the card catalogue to find Divergent. I took out both books and read them within the 7 days before I had to return Insurgent.

The world laid out by Veronica Roth is both familiar and fascinating. After I returned the library books I kept asking myself how I would respond to such terrible challenges. I realized that I needed to read them again so I picked up the audible books so I could work out the answer to my questions while driving to work, preparing dinner, or brushing my teeth.

When I was 16 or 17, I'm sure that I would have believed that Roth's world of factions, choices, and consequences could be navigated with confidence in my own intelligence and my grounded, no-nonsense life style. At 45, however, I can be honest enough with myself to say that choosing to completely break with my family to choose a new lifestyle would have been overwhelming. And at middle age, I know that I cannot even begin to imagine how to face the series of losses faced by the main character Tris. So I have to keep listening, because I'm still learning about myself.

And Allegiant is coming to take us all home.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tris has to continually assess her acceptance of herself and reinvent her place in a changing society, while working through layers of survivor's guilt. The character reads so true you just can't help but examine your own life and motivations. So many authors make the hero and heroine attractive, confident, and exceptionally skilled, while in real life, the bravest of people are often the least noticed. It is wonderful that Roth has given us a character with believable doubts and has tempered the heroine's successes with them.

Have you listened to any of Emma Galvin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Emma Galvin breathes life into Tris and the rest of Chicago. She matches her fine performance in Divergent. There are no moments in her delivery that ring untrue.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Having studied Jewish history for most of my life, I found that I kept drawing comparisons between Tris' reactions to actions she took or did not take and survivors' histories from the Holocaust. The author captured true mental pain and I find that I believed in the character and her motivations all the more because of it.

Any additional comments?

Highly recommended.

Another winner!!

Great 2nd book in the series! I didn't want to break away, would keep listening way past when I should have (many times sitting in the car out in front of the house, and often late into the night when working), lol!! I love to listen in the car and when designing my jewelry. I am going to go grab the last book in the series now :-)

author and narrator are brilliantly matched

If you could sum up Insurgent in three words, what would they be?

Emotional, full of action, imaginative.

What other book might you compare Insurgent to and why?

The Hunger Games due to the action, adventure and ages of the characters.

Which scene was your favorite?

Tris and Tobias having a romantic embrace...

Any additional comments?

Emma Galvin really is brilliant, I couldn't imagine any other narrator reading this book to me.

Can't wait for Allegiant

Would you consider the audio edition of Insurgent to be better than the print version?

Not necessarily. I am a strong advocate for audiobooks there are readers who struggle with words and audio can help them overcome barriers. I prefer to use audiobooks while having the print version in front of me as well.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Insurgent?

It was all very memorable. I loved watching the relationship between Tris and Tobias grow.

Which character – as performed by Emma Galvin – was your favorite?

Tris will probably always be my favorite.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, of course!! It was torture to have to push pause or go to sleep!!

Bit drawn out but great ending.

Any additional comments?

I would give divergent 4 plus almost 5 and this 4 minus. Same characters, but Tris becomes a bit overly insecure. I wanted to yell get over it. I was was thinking I might not want to get the 3rd when it comes out, but by last 1/3 story itself got so good, I got rehooked.
