Publisher's Summary

He was tall, at least six feet, with dirty blond hair that hung over his eyes. His T-shirt read Nietzsche Is My Homeboy.

So, that was Matt. Who Julie Seagles likes. A lot. But there is also Finn. Who she flat out loves.

Complicated? Awkward? Completely.

But really, how was this freshly-minted Boston transplant and newbie college freshman supposed to know that she would end up living with the family of an old friend of her mother’s? This was all supposed to be temporary. Julie wasn’t supposed to be important to the Watkins family, or to fall in love with one of the brothers. Especially the one she’s never quite met. But what does that really matter? Finn gets her, like no one ever has before. They have connection. But here’s the thing about love, in all its twisty, bumpy permutations - it always throws you a few curves. And no one ever escapes unscathed.

    "Loved it"

I absolutely loved this book… I will admit that I was brought in by Julia Whelan because she is one of my favorite narrators but the book itself was wonderful as well. I have already purchased flat out Celeste and even though I'm excited to know what happens to the Watkins family I'm very disappointed that Julia is not narrating that book as well… It seems confusing to me why a different narrator would be chosen?

I'm a graduate student from Flint, MI. My day job affords me hours to enjoy audio books while I work. Self-professed Narrator Snob!

"Great characters tangled in a ridiculous story"

I would like to start by saying the narrator did a fantastic job and I have nothing bad to say about her. She was great from start to finish!

Having said that, I really did not like this story. It's a funny concept but how in the world could she not see what was happening? Honestly, after my second introduction to Flat Finn I was like "oh, so that's what this is..."
and I thought that would be the end of it. As soon as your audience figures it out shouldn't your characters be pretty close behind? NOPE! The whole book later it finally comes out and I feel like shouting DUH!!

Don't get me wrong, I Loved Julie. I loved her relationship with Celeste and Matt and even Flat Finn, but I just couldn't love her trials because I found the whole scenario a little too strange to swallow (and I'm a huge Molly Harper fan so that's saying something).

Great characters, not so great story. Thankfully Jessica Park also wrote "Left Drowning" which was amazing and that made me feel better :-)

    "Flat out fun"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would. It was fun to try to figure out the things behind the characters. They all had a lot going on. Yet I didn't feel like it was to over the top. Something as dramatic and horrible as what happened to this family will make people do funny and strange things.

What does Julia Whelan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

You know I simply love her take on Matt.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

So that I don't give anything away I'm just going to say Christmas tree.

    "This can happen"
What made the experience of listening to Flat-Out Love the most enjoyable?

If you have never suffered a loss so horrible you cannot accept the reality, you may think this is beyond what can happen. I can't say I enjoyed this book, I figured it out pretty early on, but I had to know what happened to the characters. I believe this story was well written and well narrated.

What other book might you compare Flat-Out Love to and why?

Easy by Tammara Webber, sort of.

What about Julia Whelan’s performance did you like?

She is a very very good narrator. I have listened to her in several stories. She is easy to listen to and gives each person a voice allowing me to separate the characters easily.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, I cried. I laughed too.

    Any additional comments?

Worth the credit. I admit the titled bothered me until I the light bulb went off and I realized "Flat Fin".

    "A very satisfying listen/read"

I really enjoyed listening to this book and thought the performance was very good. The performer portrays emotion and vocal nuances very well and for the most part the character voices are easily distinguishable. While it took me a little time to connect with the protagonist, she is likable and develops throughout the story. The story has depth, is intriguing, and is easily relatable for a wide audience due to its realistic and quirky nature.

This was in the "Romance" category, and while there is a romance within the book it's story would hold up well without it, which is not very common in the romance genre. I would categorize it as Young Adult - Contemporary - Coming-of-Age, and think it could be enjoyed by "Tweens" through adults (depending on the maturity level of the child). Check it out, and as always with audiobooks, give it a fair chance to draw you in since it often takes time to get accustomed to the performer and writing style. I hope this helps a little bit.

    "Amazing"
Where does Flat-Out Love rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Best audio book I have read so far. The narrator was fantastic.

What other book might you compare Flat-Out Love to and why?

I don't read YA books so I don't have any comparisons.

What does Julia Whelan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

When she was doing Julie’s voice she sounded like Kristen Bell to me, which was pretty cool. From Erin’s haughty voice to Celeste’s high pitched younger voice I liked them all.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The narrator did the cracks in her voice when Matt got choked up so well I started crying. It felt very real to me. Bravo!

    Any additional comments?

I am diving into Flat Out Celeste next and I am kind of sad Julia is not narrating this book.

    Any additional comments?

I suspected this would be a light weight teen love story and was still drawn to give it a listen. So Glad I did. The story turned out to be a mystery with depth that explores our human coping mechanisms and the fascinating way simplicity of caring and taking action can help us heal.

I listen to audiobooks on my long commute, when I'm typing away in patient charts, and as I'm going to sleep. Murder mysteries are my fave!
