Donors, leaders of nonprofits, and public policy makers usually have the best of intentions to serve society and improve social conditions. But often their solutions fall far short of what they want to accomplish and what is truly needed. Moreover, the answers they propose and fund often produce the opposite of what they want over time. We end up with temporary shelters that increase homelessness, drug busts that increase drug-related crime, or food aid that increases starvation.

If we don’t acknowledge our interdependence's complexity, then we are doomed to replicate a system that will ultimately fail. Just as every node on a network contributes to the final result, every action of a member of a particular organizational system contributes to the outcome.

In a rarified world of scientific research, a revolution has been brewing. Its activists are not anarchists, but rather Nobel Laureates in physics and economics and pony-tailed graduates, mathematicians, and computer scientists from all over the world. They have formed an iconoclastic think-tank and their radical idea is to create a new science: complexity. They want to know how a primordial soup of simple molecules managed to turn itself into the first living cell--and what the origin of life some four billion years ago can tell us about the process of technological innovation today.

Extremely dry
I struggled to finish this. it is read extremely dry. A good AI would probably have read it with more feeling. This is unfortunate because books on systems theory are rare and the contents of this book seem good.

Fantastic book
This book bundle was really great to me. A great tool for better understanding the world around us and how we interact with it. Good audio and interesting information!
