Publisher's summary

I've known one thing all my life: I belong to the Fortingall Wood. I was born there and I'll die there. It's in my blood.

When slavers of the Hand take my brother, sister, and our entire village I discover nothing I know is true - not my place as a ranger or even who I am.

With the help of the Sirens, ancient warriors imbued by a goddess, I may have a shot at saving my family. But the Sirens have trouble of their own. If I want their help I'll have to free each woman from her magic-induced exile.

First, I have to find them.

But beyond the Wood is a land fallen into darkness. I'm too far out to go home and too green to fight what's coming.

Even with the Sirens by my side, life is a choice between my family or my kingdom.

Is one worth saving without the other?

Contains mature themes.

Narration Wasn’t Great

I enjoyed the story and I would probably enjoy reading it a lot more. I recommend listening to the sample before downloading the full version.

not my style

the story was good . the narrators voice and reading was good but to dramatic ...combined with authors flowery writing, I thought I was at a poetry reading. I just coudnt get lost in the story. with the big clifhanger at the end, I couldnt give it my best endorsement. since it will probably be a year before #2 comes out...I will probably forget and struggle through the story.

A Good Story / Difficult Listen

Overall the story was interesting and proceeded at a good pace. I would rate it between a 4.5 or 4.6. As other reviews pointed out the author has a propensity to wax into loquaciousness. The exception being when acts of intimacy are being described. In those instances he uses that same three words over and over again. Namely those words that describe everyone's favorite naughty bits and the inevitable culmination of intimate union that bringing those bits together results in.

The performer's voice was pleasant. Too pleasant really. Numerous times I found that my mind had drifted and I missed whole sections of dialog. Perhaps it was the cadence of his speech that lulled me again and again away from the story and into my own inner monolog? Regardless of the exact reason, I would repeatedly have to back up the story to the last thing I clearly remembered hearing. Also the narrator had the interesting ability to somehow keep the passion out of those times where he was actually trying to express passion. That being said he did an excellent job on the various character voices. Especially the female ones. That is a rare talent for male voice actors. Despite my criticisms I will listen to the next book. After all, as the other reviews pointed out, he really did end the book with a frustrating cliffhanger.

It was ok perfer Temple of Cocidius

Minor spoilers.

It was a little slow. Felt like we got to know the townsfolk better then the Sirens. Let me understand this Ewan, the MC risks all and saves Siri. But the 2 Sirens, especially Emeree given their emotional connection can't wait a few minutes for him to bath? Well they are resting and healing he pushed beyond exhaustion to the point of passing out. What exactly was his reward? The first time should be somewhat special, it's kind of disrespectful not to wait. To me this is more fantasy then reality. Reality is they wash each other even if some rely on magic. This shows appreciation and thanks by washing away all the blood, dirt and weariest from road. It also helps to build relations, bonding given this is a new relationship. Let's not forget the fact Ewan is a new member, an outsider to this relationship. Which means there should have been extra care in welcoming him. What happened is the exact opposite!

I don't fell invested in this story. To me the characters don't feel invested in each other. I'm not sure if this is a series I will continue.

Glad I got this book

I'm a huge fan of the harem genre and have read dozens of said books, and this has to be in my top 3 easily. the story had me captivated from the beginning and got better with every chapter. It ended with a cliffhanger now I wait for the next book.

Great Story

Nice plot and good performance. Worth listening to this book. I do agree with a reviewer that the ending did leave a listener hanging. Of course, this ending suggests that there will be a series. Looking forward to it.
