A simple path to a more deeply connected life

You want more. You want to belong to a community that looks out for each other. You believe in your bones we don't have to live detached, distracted, and divided. The question is, How? Shannan Martin invites you into deeper connection through simple resets, such as

- Open Door > Perfect Decor. We invite others in, seeking to connect, not impress.

- Familiar > Fussy. We serve tacos and pizza like the feasts they are, because fancy is overrated.

- Tender > Tough. We greet the world with our hearts exposed and our guards down.

Packed with street-level practices and real-talk storytelling, Start with Hello is your field guide for a life of security, camaraderie, and joy. There is no step too small.

Practical and timely ways to build community

Shannan is one of my favorite writers, thinkers, and doers. She doesn’t just have great ideas. She executes them and isn’t afraid to circle back to amend or tailor what could be improved. And even better, her ideas are mostly about relationship and removing barriers between humans, barriers most of us circumnavigate, or don’t see at all. Shannan, however, walks a brave path of building and maintaining connections somewhere, beautifully, between being too delicate and too bold. She is a model for accessing a light and surrendered self who shows up in people’s lives with chips, salsa, and few expectations. Her paradigm is inviting, her table unfussy. This book leaves you with no excuses, even removing the problem of “But what would I make?” from the minds of us who equate hospitality with hours at the stove. What I mean is she provides literal suggestions for food. Literal dialogue for creating boundaries. Literal descriptors for what starting with hello might look like in your own life. If you’re itching to push out of your comfort zone to better embrace others and forge community either in your neighborhood or other social circle, this is where to start.
