Publisher's summary

In 1999, Quan Huynh shot and killed another man in a gang-related incident in Hollywood, California. He received a prison sentence of 15 years to life in a state that, at the time, did not parole prisoners with life sentences. Behind bars, Quan continued his downward spiral.

This could have been the end of the story for Quan, as it is for many prisoners. But somewhere along the way, he discovered a new path - one that prompted him to commit to self-reflection, truth, and personal responsibility.

Sparrow in the Razor Wire is Quan’s story of transformation inside a place many see as the end of the road. In his book, he shares the journey of redemption and discovery that led to his ultimate freedom. He found that, no matter the prison, the key to unlocking the door is in each one of us.

I felt so emotional from the beginning to the end

I loved the book and the reading by Quan. This book really struck me close to my heart because I was once in a dark place in my life too. It’s so refreshing to see someone change their life and share their experience with others. I truly hope the younger generation who are in the midst of trouble come across this book. It can change a persons life and how they view it! I highly recommend this book!

Quan's journey

I really found myself taking the journey with Quan as he describes his transition from a young adult living two lives.Where one minute he's both student with hopes of WestPoint someday somehow, and the other a gun packing gangster with his friends at night.
I am recommending this book to my friends and loved ones as an example of what transformative power and the ability to change look like in real form.

Very touching

A touching story by an incredible person who wasn’t afraid of being brave who clearly understands the saying “the greatest battles we will ever fight will be within the chambers of our own heart.”

Thoroughly Enjoyed

A look inside the mind of a lifer convicted of murder… restored a bit of humanity. Well written, entertaining, and kept me hooked the entire time.

Courageous Story

I met the author, Quan Huynh, through a philanthropy contact and after my first meeting with him I was already inspired by what little I knew about him. I bought Sparrow in the Razor Wire on Audible, narrated by Quan, which gave the book such personalization. I could not stop listening and finished the book in just a few sittings. What an honest and inspiring story! Thank you for your bravery in sharing your story, and most importantly for reminding us that everyone deserves a second chance and that people can change.

An extraordinary journey

I consumed this book in 2 days. Anyone can write a movie with made up prison stories. This is written by an actual lifer who found peace in prison of all places. It reinforced some concepts I already knew and taught me some brilliant ones

The gift of redemption

This book begins with a smart and precocious 8 yr old boy in Provo, Utah doing his best to navigate the confusion of finding his place as a Vietnamese immigrant amongst a Mormon population that which likely shares in this confusion. Soon his father is dead and his mother is on her own.

The absence of his father I believe is crucial to where The Author Quan looses his way, although there are understandably more pivotal points later in his young life attributing to this loss.

A move to Anaheim, the loss of a job and his still present unease about where he goes from here quickly lands him in prison with a life sentence for murder.

The beauty in this story is his journey to redemption and grace he asks of himself, gives to others and takes the reader along as he finds his ultimate freedom.

This book is truly a gift to anyone regardless of their experience. The audiobook is read by the author himself and is another bonus.
