Publisher's summary

From the outside looking in, Jennifer Pan seemed like a model daughter living a perfect life. The ideal child, the one her immigrant parents saw, was studying to become a pharmacist at the University of Toronto. But there was a dark, deceptive side to the angelic young woman.

In reality, Jennifer spent her days in the arms of her high-school sweetheart, Daniel. In an attempt to lead the life she dreamed of, she would do almost anything: lie about her whereabouts, forge school documents, and invent fake jobs and a fictitious apartment. For many years she led this double life. But when her father discovered her web of lies, his ultimatum was severe. And so, too, was her revenge: a plan that culminated in cold-blooded murder. And it almost worked, except for one bad shot. The story of Jennifer Pan is one of all-consuming love and devious betrayal that led to a cold-hearted plan hatched by a group of youths who thought they could pull off the perfect crime.

Factual but interesting

I appreciate that the author was able to write the story objectively. It is often difficult for people to leave their personal opinions out of a story to prevent persuading their audience.

A daughter’s deadly deception

This is a very sad story. I cannot believe a daughter can plot the murder of her parents. I recommend this book, it’s engaging and a lot of curiosity as-to how can someone plan a love ones demice. Very disturbing and mind boggling story.

Good Story - Odd Formating

This really is a good true crime story. I just didn't care for the way the case was presented. I feel like this is a 4 hours story that's been stretched into 12 hours. Narration is serviceable.

Drones on!

I found this read to be exceptionally boring, not only does it skip around A LOT making it hard to follow, its full of boring, unimportant details. I had to quit listening around the 4tb chapter.. I kept listening w/the hopes of it getting better, grabbing my attention w/the next chapter, however, that was not the case.. maybe others will find it to their liking , I however, did not !!

Blah

Not a captivating story. I listened half way and couldn’t finish. I wish I could return it for my credit back.

Boring

Too many stories within the main story. Backstory for every single person involved that I didn’t care for. Very boring. I couldn’t finish this.

Could have been great

The facts of this case gave the author a chance to tell a fascinating story. Instead, this book is hard to follow, repetitive, and too long. Constant jumping around in the timeline, extraneous details, and far too many poorly narrated text message exchanges.
The narration is serviceable, but the writing just...isn’t. This plot thickens…into a quagmire.
I powered through this, and I couldn't tell you why I stuck it out.
There's an afterword from an expert and from the author, both of which add little.
My general feeling was that the perpetrators get so much of the author's attention while the victims get little. In fact, I was left feeling that the author felt outsized sympathy for Jennifer Pan that he didn't capture the scale of her wrongdoing.

Honestly, I'd say to save your credit.

Not Worth Listening

I love true crime and the story seemed interesting. However it was so boring- very dry and dragged on with so many tiny insignificantly boring facts about the case and all the people involved- or even those who might be involved and their boring back stories! It was agonizing to listen to and put me in a bad mood every time I listened- not because of the topic- just the way the story was written and told.
