Publisher's summary

Discover your unique imprint for work that makes you come alive, fills you with meaning, joy, purpose, and possibility, then spend the rest of your life doing it.

We’re all born with a certain “imprint” for work that makes us come alive. This is your "Sparketype®," your DNA-level driver of work that lets you know, deep down, you’re doing what you’re here to do. Work that motivates you, fills you with purpose and, fully-expressed in a healthy way, becomes a main-line to meaning, flow, performance, and joy. Put another way, work that “sparks” you.

Sparked draws upon years of research, experimentation, more than 25-million data-points generated by over half-a-million people, and hundreds of deep-dive conversations with luminaries from science to art to industry and wellbeing. Award-winning author, serial wellness-industry founder, and host of the top-ranked Good Life Project®, Jonathan Fields, and his team at Spark Endeavors, developed the Sparketype imprints and methodology that is the basis of this book.

In this book, Fields and his team will help you:

  • Discover what sparks you, what drains you, where you stumble and come alive, so you can reclaim a sense of direction, control, and purpose;
  • Understand the “real” reasons certain experiences, jobs, and roles leave you empty and know how to make things better, without having to endure big disruptive changes;
  • Learn from real-world, relatable stories, case-studies, and data-driven insights;
  • Identify the action steps to begin immediately transforming the way you work and live.

Sparked takes you deep into the world of the Sparketypes, revealing an entirely new depth of insights about what makes you come alive in work life, along with what empties you out and trips you up, so you can avoid those life-drains.

You’ll discover tons of case studies, stories, and real-world applications, creating a comprehensive guide to help you discover what you are meant to do and how to get started.

Learn to see the world and yourself in a new light

I took the spark test and bought the book after listening to a podcast interview with Jonathan Fields. I found the ideas being the sparkatypes fascinating and am looking at how I work quite differently. I have yet to integrate any of this into my life so may update this review later on, but of you are searching for your calling or just enjoy learning how you and others think this is a great place to start. Also the writer has a wonderful long running podcast called the good life project so his narration of the book is perfectly recorded and easy on the ears.

Disappointed

I was really expecting to love this book. While taking the test I started to become skeptical but just tried to be genuine with my answers.

Result came back as essentialist. Looking at the basic description of this type I thought, ok, that makes sense. I do like to distill things down to get to the simple underlying concepts or patterns. Sure. But then when I listened to the essentialist section and heard the examples, it was complete garbage. According to that, the essentialist is the anal retentive obsessively detailed note taking type A bossy control freak? Huh? It didn’t really even seem to support the definition of the Sparketype. In fact, it seemed like it was describing people who were the opposite of essentialist. I can imagine having to weed through the excessive notes, etc created by the profiled person to actually get to what was essential. I know these types of people. So then I listen to the other types and find that I could just as easily identify with Scientist or Maeven. Completely lost respect for the whole thing. I really can’t imagine how this would be life changes for thousands of people.

I don’t think the questions answered in the test actually correspond very well to the supposed results. I keep plenty of books that at least provide some value or insight even if I was a big fan overall. Returning this one.
