A time tested book. I found alot of the information to be very helpful. It contains a balance of religion with the advice it has in it. Worth every penny.
I love the way NVP cares about people. I love the way he refers to Scripture to lift and encourage people. It built my confidence I never knew I had. This book and it's tips and teachings are so easy to understand, a third grader can appreciate it as well as an adult. It's humbling and inspiring at the same time. I read it over several times a year because life can knock you down and be cruel.
A classic ! Kind of reminds me of How to win friends and influence people. I loved the fact that the author is the narrator, some of the storys he used, i found to be quite funny and had a few good laughs through out listening. I loved it ! It really emphasized the power of faith and prayer which I find absolutely essential to surviving day to day life. Most people can use all the tip they can get to stay positive. I esspecially enjoyed his remedy for worrying. I helps.
I listened to this 12 years ago and I had to add it to my collection. I'm not of his faith, but the principles are universal. Definitely worth listening to.
I have to admit I have owned the book for almost a decade and struggled to get through it. Maybe the difference is the period which it was written in or his ability to tie the bible in. It just didn't create any feeling of curiosity or desire. The style of the book and the audio abridged version I felt lacked excitement and gratitude, that one should feel after hearing the message of Peale. This book and audio program has sold millions and I still recommend both as they have key principles that may help you look at your self differently. May you listen to this audio book and do what's most important which is take a thorough self analysis to understanding yourself. Conquer yourself by creating better habits by stacking good ones all day.
As some others have said, if religion isn't your thing, pass on this book. I appreciate his positive stances and passion for his religion and faith but it's not my cup of tea. I am 35 minutes into it and I can hardly stand listening to one more minute.
The entire book so far has been based on Christianity, faith and prayer. If these aren't in your daily life, pass on this book. I had high hopes for this book and wish I could get a refund...
The audio edition of The Power of Positive Thinking is a wonderful complement to the print version. I have owned this book both in cassette and CD formats. It's nice to have it in a totally digital format that can go anywhere with me.
I always prefer hearing the author read a book than a professional narrator for two reasons: First, the author knows where he/she wants the emphasis to be. Second, I can get some good insights as to the author's character.
The people who complain about the religiosity of the text have only their poor research for their problem. A quick overview of Dr. Peale's background would have revealed that he was a Christian minister and his doctorate was in theology. Dr. Peale pastored Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan for over 50 years. All of this information is readily available for anyone to see. My only complaint with Dr. Peale's writing is that it has a somewhat stilted style that is typical of most works originally published in the first half of the twentieth century.
Very helpful! Might get print book because I think it's a bit longer and more complete plus there are action lists that will be easier to follow in print. I'll be listening to this until I probably have it memorized. Just finished and restarting once I finish this review.
"For practicing Christians"
Fine if you're Christian but rubbish if you're not! Like listening to a couple of corporate American pie evangelists
"it does have strong points of view . it was good"
it reveals some mistake that we make most of our lifes. i.m impressed with the book.
Great book. It's got a string biblical theme throughout which I thought might put me off given that I'm neither religious or from a Christian background. However, the ideas presented are practical and useful and I was very impressed by the interpretation of the biblical verses to put forward the ideas in the book.
Well worth it.
"Religious Book with Nothing Practical - *SO* Disappointing"
I'm actually angry that this religious promotion can be grouped in the same category as "How to Make Friends and Influence People" and "Eat that Frog," both of which are excellent "Self-help" books.
It sounds like it's read by The Rich Texan from The Simpsons, who I imagine to have a pay per view channel to raise funds for his Sunday Sermons.
I have no problem with this having mention of religion but it is CONSTANT.
The worst part of it is that there is nothing practical you can do to achieve the goal of the book, aside from learn all of the Bible passages on "confidence" and "have faith." I would have tolerated this man's faith so I could learn.
The more I listened (I gave it 20 plus mins), the more angry I got.
Scientific learning and religious propaganda do NOT sit next to each other in the same section.
I'm incredibly disappointed. Why's no on else pointed this out, I'd never have bought it?!
This book is extremely focused on the bible, Jesus Christ and the Lord. Unfortunately while I believe in positive affirmations, I don't want to be preached to
"A great 'read'"
Loved it and how it made faith practical. It's empowering and I would recommend it.
Really enjoyed listening to this book. Very practical tools given to help impliment it into your daily life.
"chapter4 i didnt get listening to because it skips"
i like the book,- very helpful, but chapter 4 jumps all over the place so i couldn't listen to a word.
The other three chapters were very incouraging, inspiring over all very good.
"Renews my vitality every time I read it"
Fantastic read especially during my run. I feel these are timeless truths which have been proved
This audio books is OK I guess if you are a committed Christian. with constant and irritating references to the bible, praying, the scriptures. the voice is of an american older gentleman and is quite annoying and slow.
full of stories of his life experiences.witch makes up most of the book with little practical advice apart from read the bible and pray ect ect more like a sermon in church than a practical self help book.
