Solid, direct, respected

Comprehensive framework into which we can plug our learning over time. I appreciated the fine effort.

Survey of Biblical Context

Excellent covenental framework for interpreting the New Testament in light of the historical, literary, and sociological context of the Old Testament.

Awesome Reading

An awesome read. Opened my eyes to how reading the bible through a western eye can lead to misunderstanding . Understanding the Jewish culture has helped me understand how God spoke to his people.

So Detailed

This was exactly what I needed. I thought I knew a good portion of the Bible as I have read it cover to cover in many different ways. But the parallels and insights she provides are nothing short of earth shattering and eye opening. Great insight.

Really wonderful overview of the Old Testament

Richter provide a very general overview of the Old Testament’s overarching themes. Especially valuable is the “frequently asked questions” last chapter. This book or something like it should be required reading for believers.

Great book but I miss the pictures

It’s a great book that explains the culture behind the bible and clarified so many bible principles. But for sure misses all the pictures, maps and tables that the narrator tells about.

Pretty good for a Methodist

Dr. Sarah Richter is a great scholar in the Old Testament. For the most part it was pretty good. Being a Reformed Baptist, high feel like I could detect her Methodism, which at times was hard to swallow, but at least now, you know the perspectives of the reviewer, and (I think) the author of the work.

very knowledgeable author

I enjoyed this book and learned a lot from it. The author is very knowledgeable on the subject and had some good insights throughout. However, the author also added personal useless phrases such as 'don't I know that' or 'now that something i can relate to'. These phrases, which I may not have quoted exactly as used, are very annoying and detract greatly from the overall experience.

Loved it so much I read it twice

The author does a great job of organizing the Old Testament around key theological frameworks (eg, the covenants) and contextualizing the stories for modern western Christians. Highly recommended! A friend who bought the book based on my recommendation devoured it in two days. We both thought it was hard to put down
