Publisher's summary

This two-hour lecture by Dr. Jane Nelsen was given on May 12, 2005, during the Butte County Department of Behavioral Health Parent Conference in Chico, California.

You'll learn:

  • Why punishment is never appropriate for children of any age.
  • Why any kind of time-out is not appropriate for children under the age of four, and how to create a positive time-out area "with" your four- or five-year-old that is encouraging, empowering, and teaches valuable life skills.
  • How the brain develops, and why parents often expect things of their children that are not developmentally or age appropriate - such as sharing, apologizing, and understanding "no" the way you think they do.
  • The three most important discipline tools to use with children under the age of three. Many other parenting tools that can be used with children under the age of three - and even more that can be used with four- and five-year-olds.
  • How to get children to cooperate because they "want" to.
How to help your children develop the belief that "I am capable, I can contribute in meaningful ways, and I can use my power in useful ways."
  • To remember why you had children in the first place.

    the picture is misleading

I thought I was buying the book. Instead this is a lecture given by Jane Nelsen. The content is ok, but I am disappointed that this was not the book. The picture is the same as the one in the book with the same title (and yes, I understand the description said it was a lecture, but I didn't read it). So the problem is really with Audible - use a different picture for pete's sake!

Should be Positive Discipline: Age 4 and Beyond

I was hoping for some positive discipline techniques that would work for my two year old, but the author mainly focused on kids around four years old and a little older. I don't know if this is because this "book" was a lecture and the author had to mainly focus on answering the audiences questions, or what, but I was very dissapointed.

The sound quality was poor as well. I had to constantly switch from turning the volume down and up, because the speaker was extremely loud, and the audience members who were asking questions were extremely low.

The author did have some good advice and techniques for older kids, but overall, I was not a fan of this audiobook.

    GOOD - but not great

This is an audio of a lecture/ presentation, so some of the audience questions are difficult for me to hear. I did find some of the information useful and will try to find a hard copy of this author’s work (library or used) to see how the book(s) compare to the audio.

    Not a book

The information here is amazing, but this is not an audiobook, it's just a recording of a Q&A seminar. People are asking questions from the audience, so there is long periods of silence and other oddities of listening to a live performance. I wouldn't have picked it up if I knew it wasn't a book.

    Book or talk?

I was expecting a book not an live event talk. The message is great, sometimes it's hard to listen to the questions the participants make.

    Great Q & A Session

A great Q&A session on Positive Discipline. Very helpful to hear Jane Nelsen apply her method to parents' specific situations and issues.
