For the common man, not the health professional

This audio course is quite basic: I can't really penalize it for that. I'm sure for a lay reader, they will learn a lot (I'm a health professional). This course may save lives and years of life to those who are not very familiar with health topics. For the advanced (health / biology / medical majors / professionals) this will be too basic to the point where you don't feel you've learned anything new or gained any value. The teacher (passionate surgeon) is not monotonous so it wasn't a bore to listen to - though I typically listen to audiobooks with a 1.25x to 1.50x speed magnification to save time and also to not get bored...

There is no Bibliography

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Add the bibliography as a pdf file

What did you like best about this story?

The speaker was outstanding

Any additional comments?

Dr. Goodman references the bibliography and a list of resources many times in the book, yet Audible/Great Courses doesn't see fit to provide audible listeners these documents. It's a shame, I would have purchased many more of them if they had.

Excellent. Intelligent.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. Dr. Goodman was a great speaker. I loved his pace and his ability to speak in layman's terms without it sounding like he was talking down to you and at the same time, use correct terminology for those who DO want the right words/vocabulary.

The science of health for the rest of us

Dr. Goodman does a very good job of tying actionable health advice to the basic science that supports it. It's helpful to know not only that something is good for you, or not good for you, but also why that is true. For me, the why adds a lot to my ability to follow through. Additionally, Dr. Goodman doesn't come at this program with 60 things you should change tomorrow. Instead, he consistently recommends small course changes that in years can take you to a whole different (and more healthy) destination.
I found the lecture itself to go a bit slowly, so I listened to most of it at 1.25 and 1.5 speed. Other than that, it was easy to listen to, and even the topics that don't affect me (like smoking or steroid use) were interesting from an academic perspective. There is nothing earth shattering here, but that is more actionable anyhow. If you are looking for good advice and some shallow digging into health science, this is a good lecture.

If you step back from this subject in general, it's all about common sense and moderation. Eat wholesome, exercise more, get plenty of rest. But the how's and why's are clearly presented with common sense approach to achieving all of this. Everything from prostate exam options to menopause and children's health or allergies. Loved it!

Evidence based life sciences at its best.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. Dr.Goodman is definitely a great teacher in medicine who can simplify very complex and confusing scientific evidences into concise, simplified yet practical to the listener. It is a "Must read or listen" for everyone who cares to live a good life. It will shed light for those who has been getting lost spending their whole life trying to find a magic bullet from outside only to find that it can simply be done from our inside. Great not only for layman, but also for medical students.

Terrific overarching book on general health topics

This is a great listen for a book on general heath topics ranging from exercising, to doctor visits, to supplements, to organic whole foods. Surprisingly, this was written by a traditional western medical doctor but who does a nice job of separating fact from fiction but incorporating the latest thoughts from all parts of the world, but eastern and western thought. I really felt like he did a good job of trying to keep his own opinion to a comfortable minimum and instead focus on what science has shown. I can pretty much summarize his recurring theme . . . if you want to live long and healthy, exercise regularly and eat most whole organic fruits vegetables, fruits, and nuts, and fish and stay away from supplements, processed foods, etc. and go easy on the meats. I give this book 2 thumbs up. Very balanced and touches on just about everything that is relevant.

Facts without too much heresay

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

He discusses what the research says... what he think is secondary

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, even at 1.5x this is a monster book/course at 36 hours... Has taken me a month of intermittent listening

Any additional comments?

I love his ability to quote real studies... whilst I have not looked into all of them, I have read up about a couple and his take away matched my own.

Good information; applause irritating!

The content is excellent but the disruptive recorded applause is frankly, annoying. The teaching company even does the applause during meditation sessions. Please consider stopping this practice. We all know the reader/instructor is not in front of an audience. They are in a studio with a mic in front of them. I like your audio book but ..

Great Overview on Healthy Living

This is a basic primer course on heathy living--it's quite extensive but never digs too deeply into a single subject. And the course continuously reinforces some very basic concepts for healthy living. Because of this, most health professionals are probably familiar with much of this lecture already. I am, however, not a health professional so I walked away with a ton of useful stuff from this course!

Not all the subjects interested me but the narration was well done and kept me engaged. The author brings a sense of discovery and curiosity, which makes even the chapters that might not apply to me (I'm a younger male), engaging.

I was searching for a health resource that wasn't specialized, and one that I could apply to my life right away. And this was an excellent choice! It's not a get-fit-quick book; it's a treasure trove of wisdom in ways we can make one degree changes in our lives that will allow us to get more from each day. "It's not the destination--it's the journey", Goodman writes; this audio book certainly is helping out on my own. Recommended.
