Lovingly, clearly, Tara Bennett-Goleman shows how most of what troubles us falls into 10 basic emotional patterns or schemas, including perfectionism, vulnerability, mistrust, and the fear of abandonment. Through schema therapy, she teaches us how to break free from such patterns and replace them with empathy for ourselves and others, and gives us the freedom to be more creative and alive.
Emotional Alchemy explores the latest research in cognitive therapy and neuroscience, including the "magic quarter-second": the moment in which it is possible for a thought to be "caught" before it turns into an emotional reaction; the moment in which we can reject a self-defeating emotional impulse. The program then powerfully combines this science with ancient Buddhist wisdom that guides us to end our self-destructive habits. These teachings include the meditative awareness of mindfulness: an awareness that lets us see things as they truly are without distortion or judgment, enabling us to change not only our lives, but the very structure of our brains.
Wise and pragmatic, gentle and inspiring, this is a liberating journey for those who wish to free themselves from suffering or help others on the way.

"May this very important and enticing book find its way into the hearts of readers near and far so that it can perform its mysterious and healing alchemy for the benefit of all." (Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of Wherever You Go, There You Are)
Downloaded the 3 hour abridged version in Oct 2001 and found it helpful and interesting. The book gave an excellent account of how to recognize and deal with the powers of instinct. To recognize, as author puts it "schema behavior" is the essential first step in dealing with the behavior. I still think of the book often when confronting my own reactions and the reactions of others. Based upon the reviews posted above though, I guess there wasn't much to gain from listening to the 11 extra hours in the unabridged version.
Terrific perspective on the effectiveness of using mindfulness meditation when dealing with schemas as they relate to thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. The book addresses individuals using the methods on their own to improve themselves, or in counseling by combining the techniques with psychotherapy, or use within relationships with a partner or friend. It also offers it as a way to understand the thinking, emotions and behaviors of others through understanding their schemas. The voice of the narrator was pleasant to listen to, and I enjoyed the book from beginning to end.
