Publisher's summary

Being a parent is usually all about giving of yourself to foster your child's growth and development. But what happens when this isn't the case? Some parents dismiss the needs of their children, asserting their own instead, demanding attention and reassurance from even very young children. This may especially be the case when a parent has narcissistic tendencies or narcissistic personality disorder. From the author of Working with the Self-Absorbed and Loving the Self-Absorbed, this major revision of a self-help classic offers a step-by-step approach to resolving conflict and building a meaningful relationship with a narcissistic parent. The second edition of Children of the Self-Absorbed offers clear definitions of narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder to help you identify the extent of your parent's problem. You'll learn the different types of destructive narcissism and how to recognize their effects on relationships. With the aid of proven techniques, you'll discover that you're not helpless against your parent's behavior and that you needn't consider giving up on the relationship. Instead, realistic strategies and steps are suggested for learning to set mutually agreed upon behaviors that can help you fulfull your needs and expectations.

Good info but ...

This book could have been so much better if the woman who read it didn't read like. Every. Word. Is. It's. Own. Sentence. And. Over. Enunciate. Every. Single. Syllable. And. Inflection.

Her reading is so annoying that I could only listen to this book in small doses. However, there is good information within ... just buy the print version.

Good information

This is a very good book if you had a narcassist parent ... there are plenty of good information ... yet if you only had to read one book on the subject then skip this one ... watch out for the narrator .. she got on my nerves

uninspiring

I was annoyed at the compromising attitude of this book. Basically it understates a very serious form of bad parenting and child abuse.

Narcissism, is a serious form of Personality Disorder and is a lesser form of Psychopathy. Such people are grossly destructive by choice and should in no way be indulged! Infact, like the Terminator, they can't be taught, or bargained with. Use the propositions in this book 'they will be back'! Oh the pain....

No thanks...

content good

Although the content is really helpful and well thought out the way it is written is dull and requires you to do alot of paper work. I prefer a format that delivers the message through story/case study and places less emphasis on questionaires. However the content truely is helpful and good to work through. Ok Naration.

horrible narration

the book had a lot of good points and was highly informative. unfortunately I don't know if the narrator had an accent or a lisp, but enunciation would have definitely made the read more enjoyable

Not good

The narrator's accent distracted from the content which was way too much detail for an audio book. The exercises might be helpful, but I'd have to get a hardcopy to review. Not worth the time trying to listen to this.

This book was very helpful in understanding why we feel so responsible for our parents unhappiness. The book gives suggestions that overcome this automatic response.

Bad narration ruins a good book

The book itself is most helpful and insightful. And triggering, but that’s only because it hit so close to home for me.

The narration is abysmal. She is struggling so hard to read the words that each. Word. Becomes. It’s. Very. Own. Sentence. Save yourself and buy the print version!

Self - reflection

Whether we want to or not, we adopt some behaviors of our parents. I realized that I needed to have more empathy for some people and not take on some people's emotions. I'm only responsible for my reaction.
