Publisher's summary

Heart disease is the #1 killer. However, traditional heart disease protocols - with their emphasis on lowering cholesterol - have it all wrong. Emerging science is showing that cholesterol levels are a poor predictor of heart disease and that standard prescriptions for lowering it, such as ineffective low-fat/high-carb diets and serious, side-effect-causing statin drugs, obscure the real causes of heart disease. Even doctors at leading institutions have been misled for years based on creative reporting of research results from pharmaceutical companies intent on supporting the $31-billion-a-year cholesterol-lowering drug industry.

The Great Cholesterol Myth reveals the real culprits of heart disease, including:

  • Inflammation
  • Fibrinogen
  • Triglycerides
  • Homocysteine
  • Belly fat
  • Triglyceride to HCL ratios
  • High glycemic level

Bestselling health authors Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., and Stephen Sinatra, M.D. give listeners a four-part strategy based on the latest studies and clinical findings for effectively preventing, managing, and reversing heart disease, focusing on diet, exercise, supplements, and stress and anger management.

Get proven, evidence-based strategies from the experts with The Great Cholesterol Myth.

Critic reviews

"Anyone skeptical of the notion that there is more to heart disease than 'cut your fat, take a statin drug' would be well served by [listening to] this book." (William Davis, M.D.)

Perfect example of scientific audio excellence

Concepts are presented in a relatable, understandable, but not condescending manner. has the perfect balance of scientific fact and self deprecating humor.

Interesting view on truth behind health

The information raised is very intriguing.
The in depth analysis of the science behind the body’s need for cholesterol and the pharmaceutical push to sell medication hits the truth button a little too hard. It’s a shame how western medicine isn’t truth, but a biased pay to play industry.

The book that got me started on weight loss

What did you like best about this story?

It made me angry at the FDA, the government and food companies, not to mention doctors and big pharma. We have been hoodwinked for so long, follow the money. This book made me so mad that I started listening to all kinds of nutrition books to educate myself and within 9 months I lost 56 lbs and feel 15 years younger. I ditched the bp and cholesterol meds with approval of my doctor and all my aches and pains disappeared. I ended up following bits and pieces of many lifestyle diets but mainly followed Wheat Belly, Atkins and The Perfect Health Diet. I am now whole fat, somewhat low carb but my carbs come mainly from root vegetables, potatoes, wild rice and NOT bread, processed foods or flour products. I even gave up coffee and switched to tea once or twice a day. I added yoga classes twice a week about 2 months into my lifestyle change and now I am slimmer and healthier and have a lot more energy. This book was the beginning to my road to a healthier body and a better lifestyle diet. I am 56 years old and proved to myself that my age and menopause are not to blame for being overweight and feeling overall crappy, it was my food choices and believe it or not, I was not a big junk eater but I did eat a lot of whole grains, whole wheats, oatmeal and so called healthier cereals, ha ha, what a mistake that was. My weight went from 202 to 146 in 9 months and I can do shoulder stands in yoga, now that is a big accomplishment for a 56 year old woman who had knees so bad she wished she had crutches just a little over a year ago.

EXCELLENT EXPLANATION OF CHOLESTEROL

Would you listen to The Great Cholesterol Myth again? Why?

I will listen to it again because of all the helpful information offered.

What other book might you compare The Great Cholesterol Myth to and why?

I don't usually read this type of book, but due to high cholesterol problem, I decided to delve into this one. It was written with down-to-earth explanations which my doctor had neither the time or desire to go over with me. It also gave me other alternatives to statin drugs, which I immediately put to use and seem to be working like a charm.

What about George K. Wilson’s performance did you like?

I enjoyed Wilson's performance very much as he has a clear and smooth voice. He was an excellent choice for this material.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did....so interesting and easy to understand. I could not put it down.

Any additional comments?

The REAL story about cholesterol!

What did you love best about The Great Cholesterol Myth?

The Great Cholesterol Myth demystifies the idea that eating saturated fats from meats and other natural foods are bad for you. The doctor gets right to the point and explains, in detail, what really causes plague in arteries and provides real-life solutions for preventing and even reversing arteriosclerosis. It's thought provoking and compelling. I've listened to it (3) times already! If you care about your health and want to live heart-disease free, listen to this book!
