Publisher's summary

The masterpiece that started Terry Goodkind's New York Times bestselling epic Sword of Truth

In the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, appears in Richard Cypher's forest sanctuary seeking help...and more. His world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence.

In a dark age it takes courage to live, and more than mere courage to challenge those who hold dominion, Richard and Kahlan must take up that challenge or become the next victims. Beyond awaits a bewitching land where even the best of their hearts could betray them. Yet, Richard fears nothing so much as what secrets his sword might reveal about his own soul. Falling in love would destroy them - for reasons Richard can't imagine and Kahlan dare not say.

In their darkest hour, hunted relentlessly, tormented by treachery and loss, Kahlan calls upon Richard to reach beyond his sword - to invoke within himself something more noble. Neither knows that the rules of battle have just changed...or that their time has run out.

Wizard's First Rule is the beginning. One book. One Rule. Witness the birth of a legend.

Not enough time in a day.

This is my favorite book in the world. I've owned several copies, new and used, and have read and listened to this one a hundred times. It makes me laugh, tears my heart from my chest and then smooths it all over with a love story that is actually worth wishing to replicate. Terry Goodkind is a master of his art and Sam Tsoutsouvas' voice really brings it to life.

Great Book AMAZING Narration

This book was one of the best I have enjoyed of its sort, if you enjoy am adventurous fantasy that will keep you surprised just buy it now. That said, I don't have the words to describe just how incredibly incredible Sam Tsoutsouvas is at narrating, I think he might be the best I have heard and might just buy every book he narrates and send him fan mail, if the book was terrible I would have smiled through the long hours of artful storytelling. Don't wait, buy it.

Great message, a bit campy

The message of growing strong through trials and the battle between good and evil was constant throughout this book. This made the plot pretty straight forward, and somewhat predictable. The middle of the book was where it got really good.

Not perfect but an entertaining story.

Good story. Starts out light and get darker about halfway through. Definitely not for children. Much better than the show they made after this book. It was perfect for a long drive

Happy Ears

This is a great story. I recommend that you buy it. After reading some of the reviews I was doubtful it would be a good listen; however, I know that everybody???s taste is different. Using my own judgment I was able to really enjoy this story. This series is similar to several other series that I have read or listened to of the same genre (how could it not) but this has a flavor all its own. Some of my favorite authors are Brandon Sanderson, Lois McMasters Bujold, Robin Hobb, Jim Butcher, and now Terry Goodkind. I enjoy listening to books and have listened to several hundred???.
The narrator, Sam Tsoutsouvas was a excellent choice!! 5 stars for his reading of this book and of course the story itself???.
