Publisher's summary

The world has collapsed, and there are no heroes any more. His name is Three, a travelling gun for hire in a dying world. He has no allegiances, no family, no ties.

Against his better judgment, he accepts the mantle of protector to a sick woman on the run, and her young son. Together they set out across the plains in search of a mythic oasis, attempting to survive the forces that pursue them, and the creatures of the dark.

In these dark times, a hero may yet arise.

Daily deal, unique story, awesome narrator.

This book was a daily deal purchase. I felt like I did actually get a good bargain because this was a very enjoyable listen. What a talented narrator (little boy voice may not be his best). Good suspense, sci-fi not too over the top. I liked it very much.

Definitely Different

The story combined with the excellent narrator bring to life a wild west-esque post apocalyptic dark, technologically advanced, and gritty world. Great character development and suspense. It was different and I really appreciated that aspect.

Fast-moving adventure in a cool future world!

I rolled the dice on this one, based on reviews--and I was definitely NOT disappointed!

In a dystopian future world where remnants of past technology still hang on, Three is a drifter, a scavenger, a hunter, an all-purpose badass. But he's also a little bored. Something's missing--and then, as he sits in a bar, drinking away his latest payoff, a woman and her son appear, begging him for help.

Their journey takes us through first-time author Jay Posey's intriguing futurescape: blasted cities, frontier villages, safehouse bunkers, all places to hide from the terrifying Weir who walk only at night. Some human badasses also stalk the trio, and the action keeps going from almost the very start as Three and his charges get into and out of one scrape after another.

Some of those scrapes are standard fare for a SF/apocalyptic novel, but the author kept the tension going through the characters themselves. Each has secrets that can make or break any situation they get into, so even when I was able to guess what might befall the travelers, I couldn't tell how things were going to shake out.

The world itself was pretty interesting, too, combining elements of a standard post-apocalyptic setting with a Gibson-esque cyberpunk tone. We never find out what happened to the world we know now, but that isn't a big deal, as the details of the future world stand in for a full-on explanation.

Luke Daniels narrates this competently, with an Eastwood-ish voice for the title character. Overall, exciting and very fun. Looking forward to the rest of this series!

Not your run of the mill story!

This book is so creative and unexpected! I loved every minute of it! The main characters are so endearing and likeable. Even Three...who is a bad, dangerous man, ends up being someone that I found myself rooting for from very early on. The world created by the author is rich and full, and broken and sad, but makes for such a great backdrop for this story! Luke Daniels is one of the truly gifted narrators out there, as well. This one is a hit!

Dark, Gritty

Post apocalyptic , a very good representative of the genre. If you use Jack Reacher as your yardstick to measure pure badassedness, Three is shoulder to shoulder with him. Narration is presented so well by Luke Daniels. In all honesty, Luke could make a phone book interesting. I will be downloading the rest of the series from Jay Posey.

Post apocalyptic adventure.

Any additional comments?

Really enjoyed the story. Three the lead character feels a reminagined Clint Eastwood Man with No Name character for the post apocalyptic world. Good story with plenty of action/adventure. Knowing this is the first book in the series it's okay that some there were still some questions left in my mind when the book was over, but I do think some of working of the world should have been fleshed out/explained. While that kind of thing can annoy me quite a bit, it was so blatant that it pulled me out of the story, it was just a little thought in the back of my mind ...sure wish I understood this part a bit better. I'll be checking out the rest of the series.

The book is narrated by Luke Daniels who is definitely one of my favorites narrators and he does his usual stellar job here.
