Audiophile since the days I had to check 'em out on rickety cassette tapes at the local library. Currently working the other side of production as an author of romance and scifi/fantasy.
Mysterious and intriguing, Hunter continues to wow in this book, giving us a strong heroine with her own mind, own faults, and own agenda. Picking up some five years after the events of A Hidden Fire, the scintillating librarian has rebuilt her life in Southern California after Gio's presence becomes by mere proxy. Though she continues friendships with others she's met during her experience in World V, she grows frustrated with Gio's absence. When he finally does walk back into her life, her stewing erupts into a full-on boiling mess. As Gio and B work to come together again as couple, Lorenzo's maleficent deeds tug around the edges of their circle of friends, bringing with it both death, and a determination for justice. Meanwhile, Gio makes it clear to Beatrice that he's interested in her for the long haul, that he wants her to be with him forever. A host of new characters and revisits by others add elegance and intrigue, culminating with Beatrice's emergence as a Damsel that can cause others some serious distress. A fantastic series for anyone who wants their mystery and mythic creatures cut with a slice of passion and romance.
Giovanni has been absent from Beatrice's life for 5 years. That's hard to cope with, when he returns professing his love and introducing her to his new son at the same time. Bea has tried to move on, reluctant to trust him again, when she learns he's been protecting her all these years. Bea's life is still in danger as Lorenzo has yet to reappear, and her Father is still missing. The mystery only grows in this installment, as the duo are out to find her Father, along with trying to protect the people they love from the villainous Lorenzo.
I enjoy the series, but I couldn't listen to the audio. It was ruining the characters for me.
Really disappointing casting. The characters are 28 but the vocals don't match; there is a twinge of NJ + valley girl that is inconsistent with a reclusive, CA librarian. Gio should be sexy, not disgruntled old man. I felt like the vocal performer really disliked the characters and wanted to portray that.
I was really disappointed and stopped listening in chapter 2 to just read the book on my kindle and infuse age appropriate, non-loathing tones.
Yes, this book is wonderful. So exciting, a little boring in the begin. Anyway, the book is excellent, and you can not put it down until you reach the end.
I think "The forgotten garden" from Kate Morton, because both books are very well written and structured.
I like all, but some times Beatrice was annoying.
Yes. To be honest I listened this book in one day and a half. I couldn't stop...
So terrific, amazing, adorable, exciting... there isn't words enough to define how good is this book.
The first book was a good read and this second book was perfection! I read to escape & with this book I was able to truly escape to wonderful world & adventure! I had pulled out Google World while listening which shows you how this book pulled me in & had very interactive...plus I'm just a nerd like that lol.
Characters: like the 1st book I felt the main character, Beatrice was extremely immature which annoyed me to know end but just because a character annoys you doesn't mean it puts a damper on the story. There were so many characters in this book that I had no trouble keeping track of. Some of them I adored (Casper, Carlwin, Isadora,Benjamin, Isabelle, Gemma,) and many evil characters I loved to hate ( Lorenzo, et al). Excellent read indeed
Found myself frustrated with Beatrice. Forgive or don't it is a choice you make then live it. It made her character very human to me. Like watching a friend struggle and triumph. Dina Pearlman is one of my favorite voices to listen to if I cannot be reading for myself.
The main character is bright, well developed, and holds her own throughout. I really enjoyed her intelligence, cleverness, and strength. Premise and characters are the most important things in any series, so I recommend this one to those who enjoy a little history in their paranormal romance adventures. I enjoyed this series very much for what it is, but there are some annoyances with the writing and audio performance though the story is good enough that it managed to pull me in.
My problem with the writing was the author's need for a thesaurus so that, for example, a word like "face" doesn't show up a half dozen times in a single descriptive paragraph (ironic, when your lead character is a librarian, no?)
My biggest issue was the narrator's mispronunciations! These were, at least, consistent so once I got done seething over a newly mangled term I had to go back to listening, because in spite of everything, I really wanted to know what happened next! Steppes are not steppies, signor does not have a hard g, and the name of that wonderful Scotch, Laphroaig, does not sound like L'Afro-Igg. As long as you can grit your teeth and glaze over this type of issue (these 3 terms were the biggest offenders for me)
If you enjoy Patricia Briggs or Ilona Andrews I can say that Elizabeth Hunter deserves a look, we readers can always hope that the editing gets tighter in future works.
This is one of the best vampire series ever written. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who likes entertaining vampire stories with a mixture of romance and mystery. This is a great book.
I love this story line and this book! A love story slowly rebuilt on trust and reassurance while an adventure is untangled and a friend is lost.
