Publisher's summary

Filled with magic, heroism, and all-too-human characters, Bujold's Sharing Knife saga is both a gripping adventure and a poignant romance. In this third volume, Fawn, the young farm girl, and Dag, the seasoned soldier-sorcerer, set off to find fresh solutions to the perilous split between their peoples—and encounter new hazards both human and uncanny.

The farmers and riverfolk have long distrusted the power of the mysterious and aloof Lakewalkers, even though they depend on them for protection from the evil malices. The proud Lakewalkers, meanwhile, have exiled Dag after learning of his marriage to Fawn, the first outsider to be bound to a Lakewalker in their magical way. But as Dag's natural Lakewalker ability to manipulate "ground energy" begins to develop in dangerous directions, he and Fawn realize that big changes are ahead.

Critic reviews

"Nebula and Hugo winner Bujold explores culture clashes in this compelling third segment of the Sharing Knife series. Bujold excels at creating interesting and sympathetic characters, and this story will satisfy readers who enjoy romance as much as adventure." (Publishers Weekly)

Excellent Series

My only regret is there address only 4 stories in this series. Amazing characters Dag and Fawn.

possibly my favorite of the series

Slice-of-life journey continues. Moving story, gently told with tense interludes. Bujold's writing is deft as always, her characters breath (and bleed). The world feels real as she unfolds it. Narration is seamless apart from her pronunciation of "bow" in its various contexts

The quality keeps coming

The third installment to a great story. The quality of the writing and narration continues. The fantasy world is expanding and more insights are explained. If you liked for the first two this is more of the same.

Great Story - Love the other 2

I love this volume 3!!! lived the first 2 and this one is just as good! I love the story line, lessons and mysteries of the characters. And I am enjoying the personalities as well! THese are so interesting and intertwined. Sometimes, these personalities remind me of those persons that I already know! I can't wait for the next volume!!!

Entrancing

I love "The Sharing Knife" books- they are engrossing and entertaining. I have never enjoyed fantasy books- but Lois McMaster Bujold is a master. The characters are endearing and soo lovable. I highly recommend these books.

Passage, Bk 3/4, Sharing Knife Series

Interesting and enjoyable installment of the Sharing Knife Series. Dag & Fawn spend harvest time with her family before deciding to travel to the sea, with her brother Whit in tow. They sign on as boat crew, pick up two Lakewalker misfits, and battle river pirates. Dag learns more about his healing skills while trying to educate "Farmers" aka non-Lakewalkers about their healing and "ground magic". As always, LMB books are so rich in content; between story, characters & plotting, that you have to read/listen multiple times to glean all the Life Wisdom she tucks in between! Dunne does an excellent job differentiating between characters and voices, and conveying emotions. So very worth the price.

fantastic book

A refreshing & entertaining series from noted sci-fi author, Lois McMaster Bujold. I've read and reread all of her novels, and especially enjoy her breakthrough fantasy works. Strongly character driven, her books never disappoint, and the Sharing Knife series is no exception. Bernadette Dunne, once again delivers an excellent performance, giving a voice to a cast of memorable characters.

Storytelling craft and magic

I love watching her bring characters in and give them themes, challenges, joys, and growths.

Just OK

McMaster's writing is superb, but this story is too slow in many places and rushes through climax. 14 hours of floating down the river. 30 minutes, find the bad guys, collect a posse and defeat them.
