Publisher's summary

In a world where malices, remnants of ancient magic, can erupt with life-destroying power, only the soldier-sorcerer Lakewalkers have mastered the ability to kill them. But Lakewalkers keep their uncanny secrets - and themselves - from the farmers they protect. So when patroller Dag rescued farm girl Fawn, neither expected to fall in love, marry, and defy both their kin to seek new solutions to the split between their peoples.

As Dag's powers have grown, so has his frustration with the Lakewalkers' rigid mores. Fawn and Dag see that their world is changing and that the traditional Lakewalker practices cannot hold the malices at bay forever. Yet for all the customs that Dag and Fawn have challenged, they will soon be confronted with a crisis beyond imagining. When the old ways fail, can their untried new ways stand against their world's deadliest foe?

Good closing.

Most thrilling from the series. Eventfull and exciting. Things that you see coming are predictable in a good way.

just another great star to add to the constellatio

these books are so great and you never end up quite where you imagined, much like the characters experience in that way as well. every new book finds it's way to add a perfect enough sized bit of science and world building in such lovely story arcs. if you want to read something that is beautifully changing every step of the way, how much of the world and life's beauty often does, this is definitely the series for you. a fact I certainly plan to continue acting on.
the author and their work in this series is a beautiful example of great storytelling, writing, world building, balancing, character development, and character creation.
every person feels individual to themselves and though some characters start out a bit shallow and simple the author makes sure to show some time or another that they have their own vast ocean somewhere to explore.
another notch on the list of great things includes the voice actor narrating the whole series, having been proving so the whole way the actor has continued to showcase wonderful emotion and character differences.

definitely a great read and a wonderful listen.

Wonderful Story

I have read this series several time, I am a big fan of Lois McMaster Bujold, and this is one of my favorite books. I have to admit I was hesitant to listen to it since I find I can easily turned off by a reader but Bernadette Dunne does a beautiful job. The entire series is wonderfully done and was a great investment.

My Favorite Yet

I love this 4th book of the series. I'm sad Lois has no plans to write another. It weaves so many loose ends of the previous books together into a conplex message of ihope. I suppose it's a great end to the series but Lois, WE WANT MORE!

Overall: excellent story; reader is only ‘good.’

Any additional comments?

The reader’s voice is very smooth and flowing, and it’s very easy to miss a word or two. Several characters have names that sound similar and I got confused. I probably will read it rather than listening if I want to repeat the book.

fell in love with this series

The fourth book of this lovely series was a nice round conclusion leaving no loose ends. I fell in love with the world that the author created and also with the love story between Dag and Fawn. The massive age difference gave me a few qualms at the beginning, but I quickly got over them. There was an innocence that indured throughout the whole series and I found it refreshing, but not at all immature. I will definitely be buying and reading more of this author's books.
