Publisher's summary

In a steel-and-lead-encased bunker 20 feet below the basement level of his house, a soldier waits for his final orders. On the surface, a plague ravages the planet, infecting over 90% of the populace. The bacterium burrows through the brain, destroying all signs of humanity and leaving behind little more than base, prehistoric instincts. The infected turn into hyper-aggressive predators, with an insatiable desire to kill and feed. Someday soon, the soldier will have to open the hatch to his bunker, and step out into this new wasteland, to complete his mission: Subvenire refectus. To rescue and rebuild.

The Remaining is the first book in the best-selling series, which tells a gritty tale of survival, perseverance and fighting to get back what has been lost.

Great post apocalyptic book. Really one of the best out there. I can't stop listening to this one and all the rest of them

Very familiar last-person-on-earth-story

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I did before I finished it...but should not have. Same old story, nothing new.

First time I've tried a "series" book.

I found this to just leave you hanging, forcing you to the next in the series. For me its not cost effective. It would be cheaper just to buy the paperbacks. If I'm spending over $2/hr to listen, I like the story to be more complete, so if I chose not to go on I don't feel like I put a book down half way through the story.

Slid RIght Into my Top 5 Zombie Books

Okay so it's not really a Zombie book. In fact as the series progresses it's less about the infected and more about the survivors which I really like. As some other reviews have mentioned it’s got a taste of Day by Day Armageddon, one of my favorites, some Zombie Fallout – minus the humor and a dash of One Second After which is not a Zombie book at all. The focus is on one main character, Lee, who has a mission to re-establish society after a global disaster, in this case a plague. It’s a bit of a stretch concept when it’s first introduced, but as the book progresses it makes more sense and becomes more plausible.

The author spins a great tale that is for sure. At times going into great detail in a particular scene to add the necessary realism and other times providing just enough information to fill in the gaps. Character development is just about perfect. Not the Stephen King endless detail on each and every Character BS, but focus where it needs to be. It’s told from the 1st person perspective, for the most part anyway, so it you get Lee’s view and interpretation of the various personalities that often change as the story develops. It all fits together so nicely. There are some real nail biting scenes that had me on the edge of my seat – car seat that is. Some very sad moments too as some are lost along the way as is expected in any Zombie/Plague book.

The narrator is outstanding as well. He is a perfect fit for the main character. Not the best with the female voices, but it by no means takes anything away from the performance. Especially since there are only a few female characters anyway – sorry ladies.

Oh and for anyone who is not reading these books based on a few comments about the cursing....a big F-bomb to that. There is by no means a lot of swearing in these books. That is total BS. Not sure who the pansies are the wrote that crap, but get over it. What are you, fricking preachers or nuns? It’s the end of the fricking world folks, I think people might just swear a little – give me a break. I cannot believe that was even said….do yourself a favor, ignore that crap.

This is a great book and as I write this I am listening to the second book which is equal if not better. It has been a while since I have looked for reasons to hop in the car and go for a ride or work in the garage just to listen to this book. I’ve been late for work almost every day since I started reading this series.

You will not be fricking disappointed - get this fricking book now !!!

Different Twist on Zombie like infection

What made the experience of listening to The Remaining the most enjoyable?

I have not even finished the 1st book yet but it is very good. I like how the infection is Zombie like but the infected still have some intelligence. Cheracters have good development and the story flows very well; keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Have you listened to any of Christian Rummel’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I don't think I have heard Christain Rummel before but he did very well.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The book has a lot of suspense and keeps you wondering what's going to happen next. I particular moment in the book that really got things moving was when Lee decided to leave the bunker.

Decent Zombie Horror

What did you like best about The Remaining? What did you like least?

The amount of realism in the world made this a compelling listen, however there were some parts that had me scratching my head (such as why soldiers like Lee weren't placed into cells, and why someone as trained as Lee didn't mention the pads for Tango)

Was The Remaining worth the listening time?

I listened to this in my commute to and from work and when I was running, as such, I found it an enjoyable way to spend my commute/time on the treadmill. Over all though, I don't know if the story compelled me enough to want to continue the series.

Brilliant story, deep heartfelt characters, and realistic outcomes! Heart thumping storyline too!

Just finished the entire series, zero spoilers in this review btw!

I must say this book, and the entire series itself, was a gut wrenching, suspenseful, and down right on the edge of my seat kind of book, page after page! I can probably count all the moments I actually felt calm in this book on one hand. Every other minute I was feeling happiness, sadness, excitement, fear, or a combination of those emotions!

Almost every character was tangible and honestly I felt like I had known them for years. Lee ( the main character ) was extremely well thought out, and the author used his brothers life experiences in the military to include details in this series that honestly sound like real life experiences! Lee sounds like he was plucked right out of the special forces and this book series really feels like the apocalypse happened yesterday. The book is also very fast pace, and you will be hard pressed not to listen to this entire series in just a few days or weeks.

This book also appeals to young adults, and the older crowd as well!

Awesome Zombie Tale

My favorite zombie series and I've read a few too. This one is straight forward and not so humorous as my second favorite (Mark Tufo's) but I personally rate it better. The narrator is very very good. If you're into this type of story or interested this is the one I would recommend.
