Publisher's summary

In a steel-and-lead-encased bunker 20 feet below the basement level of his house, a soldier waits for his final orders. On the surface, a plague ravages the planet, infecting over 90% of the populace. The bacterium burrows through the brain, destroying all signs of humanity and leaving behind little more than base, prehistoric instincts. The infected turn into hyper-aggressive predators, with an insatiable desire to kill and feed. Someday soon, the soldier will have to open the hatch to his bunker, and step out into this new wasteland, to complete his mission: Subvenire refectus. To rescue and rebuild.

The Remaining is the first book in the best-selling series, which tells a gritty tale of survival, perseverance and fighting to get back what has been lost.

Meh. Didn’t keep my interest.

Has potential but loses it. Some sparks but no fire. Hard to care for main character. Could of really used the dog as story device but does not. The Fury virus is genuinely scary but there are only a few tense passages. The best parts about the virus are the creepy details of what the infected are doing before any action begins. Molles is very good at describing those infected in a way that almost gives you the willies, but he lets it go far to soon.
Major story plot fail is how unprepared Lee actually is. For someone who’s main job is getting humanity on its feet again, and who has been “training” at it for a long time, he can’t even make it out of his basement initially without being attacked. So the Army builds a super secret vault but as soon as you step outside you’re in utter darkness. No flood lights, no perimeter cameras?
Narrator is excellent, exactly how I’d expect the main character to sound.

Overall couldn't put it down

This book was a little too gory for me but my no 1 criteria in rating a book is "couldn't put it down" - in that sense this book was great. The reader made the women sound like ditzes - maybe they are supposed to be ditzes but if they develop into more than that in future installments it won't work for me. This book ends rather abruptly - nothing substantial happens in the first book which is kinda sad. The last 30+ minutes of this book is advertisement for next book. Sigh.

Enjoyed it

I'm a huge walking dead fan and I thought this story was really a different take on the whole idea. I like the main character and it wasn't a predictable story.

Eh...so so.

The story was mediocre. The infected people in the story only set the stage for the REAL bad guys...other regular people. The infected were weak and the storyline was weak. The story was well written though and the narrator did a pretty decent job on the voices.

Near perfection.

Through the myriad apocalyptic themes, this one shines & treads water with the best.

loved it

loved it, it wasn't what I was expecting when I bought it. the writer found a story telling method that doesn't get repetitive. shorter book but worth a read.

very average,

good for a road trip, which is why I got it, but lacking the depth and realism you would find from a J.L Bourne. the main character is supposed to be a highly trained best of the best soldier yet is constantly making mistakes and seems to have no real control over his emotions
