On the surface, a plague ravages the planet, infecting over 90% of the populace. The bacterium burrows through the brain, destroying all signs of humanity and leaving behind little more than base, prehistoric instincts. If you could sum up The Remaining in three words, what would they be?

    thrilling, creepy, realistic

    Which scene was your favorite?

the infected hoard scene. reminded me of some of the scenes from the movie, world war z, with hard-charging zombies.

    Any additional comments?

this is a great book! definitely in my top 5. the author does things right. w/o divulging too much, lee works for the dept. of homeland security. he is one of the 48 coordinators spread across the lower 48 states. his job is to get into a bunker whenever something big happens. sometimes, he's in for a couple of days, and sometimes he's in for a week or two. when the fury virus hits, frank lee's commander orders him into his bunker. as the story opens, lee is going stir crazy b/c this is the longest he's ever gone being cooped up in the bunker, and the news is not good- people are killing each other. it's july 3rd and all of the news web sites are stuck on news from june 28th. lee is eagerly awaiting his regularly scheduled call from frank, hoping frank will give him the low down. lee's only companion is his trained german shepherd, tango.

the author does a great job portraying the emotions lee goes through, from feeling antsy, anxious, and claustrophobic in his bunker to being jumpy and nervous when leaving his bunker for the first time. the range of emotions lee goes through is totally believable and realistic.you can feel what he is going through.

i found the pacing of the story to be perfect. the author doesn't rush the plot, and the plot keeps moving. there are no slow points, and you won't get bored at all. there's plenty of character development mixed in with the action.

while this is not a traditional zombie book, i really dug the spin the author put on it. the infected are alive, aggressive, and fast, reminiscent of 28 days later. just like in that movie, when the infected show up in this story, it is heart pounding!

christian rummel's narration perfectly fits lee. he was a pleasure to listen.

overall, a truly exceptional and realistic apocylaptic story. if you're into end of the world or zombie stories, you'll definitely want to add this to your library. i highly recommend it!

I am so glad that I took a chance with The Remaining, turns out it is the first book of a series that I must now complete. D.J. Molles first introduces a secret "super solider" that is tucked away just in case the worst happens, if it does his orders are to eliminate the threat and to aid in the reestablishment of a government. Much of the audiobook is the internal dialog of this solider and the personal struggles of being isolated from the world for over a month to emerge to a different world. Turns out that the plague that ravaged the planet turns people into zombie like creatures that have some intelligence and some talk or communicate or scream which only adds to the soldiers torment of killing them. Filled with pulse pounding suspense, exquisitely engineered action and a truly terrifying take on zombies. I have already bought the second audiobook in the series and cannot wait to be further horrified.

    "Glad I found this series"

This is a fun series, as the genre goes there are quite a few poorly written books out there, finding a book that is well written goes a long way in this category, and this is one of them. The action is tight, the pandemic that causes the 'plague' interesting and the cast of characters well done, developed, believable. Dialog is actually good dialog and not something comic book like. The main character seems to loose his weapon a lot for a special forces guy but then nothing is perfect, he is great character and does the right thing when the chips are down. I like this book and am already into the 3rd book in the series as a result, Highly recommended.

"Die Hard Meets 28 Days Later"

This author must have gone to Stephan J. Cannell school. The action is intense, the bad guys are pure evil and protagonist constantly finds himself in situations that go from bad to worse. Unlike Cannell, this is much grittier and apocalyptic in scope.

I gave this series a try since the reviews were so positive, though I don't typically go for zombie type fiction. However, I was very surprised at the quality of writing and narration. I have gone on to listen to several more in this series and they all hold up to the same quality. I wouldn't call this a "zombie" series because the "infected" humans are more capable and enduring than walking corpses. They are relentless though. D.J. Molles does a terrific job of conjuring up a fairly unique story with good character development. The story is action packed and it's hard to pull away from, like getting on a roller coaster!

Be warned that there is a LOT of cursing. As the story advanced it seemed that the author took glee and inserting as many F words as possible. It does add reality to a point but at times it's too gratuitous.

Overall this is a wonderful audiobook to try if you are getting board with your other favorite audiobook series.

    "WOW......SHOCKINGLY BRILLIANT."

28 DAYS + WALKING DEAD + ZOMBIE FALLOUT + DAY BY DAY ARMAGEDDON = THE REMAINING!

AFTER SPENDING THE YEAR WADING THROUGH HORRIBLE ZOMBIE/APOCALYPTIC BOOKS I FINALLY FEEL THE WASTED CREDITS REDEEMED BY D.J. MOLLES THE REAMING SERIES. THOUGHT I WAS NOT GOING TO LIKE THIS SERIES AS MOST BOOKS INVOLVE EX MILITARY TRYING TO SURVIVE DURING A ZOMBIE OUTBREAK BUT WOW WAS I GLAD I TOOK A CHANCE. I HAVE FINISHED ALL FOUR BOOKS IN LESS THAN TWO WEEKS. I COULD NOT PUT THE BOOK DOWN.

LEE (MAIN CHARACTER) IS MY HERO. I WOULD LIKE THIS BOOK TO BE MADE INTO A MOVIE OR TELEVISION SERIES.

ZOMBIES IN THE STORY ARE HORRIFYING. SCENARIOS INVOLVING HUMANS ARE HORRIFYING. THIS IS A HORROR BOOK!

    NARRATOR WAS EXCELLENT!!!!!

Another good zombie series,, not all zombie books are good, specially when they are realistic a bit, but this one is fantastic!!!!

i liked the plot, I liked the story, and I liked the main character... The challenges are good, and the twists too.

For those who like Zombie books you will like this one.

"Bad plot turned out very good"

I really had my doubts about this series and only the excellent reviews led me to listen to the first book.

The premise is that the government has this secret end of the world military group which individually bunkers down for a month and come out to rebuild society. They've never had to try to fulfill their mission, until now. I could almost buy that, but they only have one man for each state? And who bunkers down for a month with a dog? It just didn't seem plausible.

Right off the bat I pegged this was a macho military special forces bang bang splatter book with nothing else to offer, the worst kind of zombie story. And I think the protagonist thought it would be like that too. Well, things didn't turn out that way. Our hero isn't perfect and makes an almost fatal mistake right away. Nothing is easy. The story and the difficulties that he and his group had to over come is gripping and compelling. They are constantly on the run, hunted with no supplies and barely making it the few hours. The only easy day was yesterday.

And my pet peeve are stupid kids messing everything up, but the author read my mind in this case with Sam! Lee is just as angry at the kid as me, almost word for word, lol.

The narrator also changed. I thought it would be like listening to the voice of those movie trailers for 8 hrs through the book, every word and sentence had to be so darn dramatic and interesting when there was nothing going on. But he dropped the over acting later. Hes very good.

In some ways this story reminds me of Day by Day. I think this is a must read if you like zombie books. Get "The Remaining" now!

"OK, Small on plot, dumb character in places"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes. Its an ok book but I wouldn't listen to second one because its just ok and you have to forgive a lot.

Would you recommend The Remaining to your friends? Why or why not?

    No because its nothing special.

What three words best describe Christian Rummel’s voice?

    Its fine.

Was The Remaining worth the listening time?

    Yes

    Any additional comments?

Like a reader said on the type edition it is way to short and not just in length but in plot. This book only covers a few days and was stopped just to have another book. Major questions. People are about to die from lack of water and are going to toilet's for water. Minutes later we are washing in a stream behind the same house. Later other people need water but are showering with rain water they have collected. This is basically a month time period where probably 90 percent of the population is probably dead but already there is a major food shortage, huh?? Overall its ok but I want more than ok in a book so I won't go on to the second one.

"Books 1-4 are some of the best work in the genre!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I am giving this review for books 1 - 4 as I listened to them back-to-back. I would HIGHLY recommend all 4 books written so far - I am so glad that 4 had been written before I found them as this has enabled me to immerse myself in this world for the past few weeks without a break. Incredibly well written, the fear is palpable and you will find your heart beating and adrenaline pumping as you read. I love the characters I am meant to love, hate the characters I am meant to hate. The books seem realistic, you are already in a world where a major situation has happen and you are not expected to suspend your disbelief any further, they flow, everything asked is answered. Exciting, engrossing, scary, nail-biting, interesting - the smells, the decay, the evil characters, the military hardware...

What other book might you compare The Remaining to, and why?

Comparable to Robert McCammon's - Swan Song, V. M. Zito's - The Return Man, David Brin's - The Postman (ignore the film, read the book), Robert Kirkman & Jay Bonansinga's - Walking Dead books, think J. L. Bourne, Craig DiLouie, Z. A. Recht - all for the world's which they create, the believable characters and situations, the horror...

What about Christian Rummel’s performance did you like?

Well paced, calm, no silly voices, no hysterical action sequences, no unwarranted tempo changes - the voice and the character match.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Without question.

    Any additional comments?

Download 1-4, listen, love... then wait for number 5 - it's in the pipeline...
