Publisher's summary

Nothing has gone according to plan.

To Captain Lee Harden, Project Hometown feels like a distant dream and the completion of his mission seems unattainable. Wounded and weaponless, he has stumbled upon a group of survivors that seems willing to help. But a tragedy in the group causes a deep rift to come to light and forces him into action. In the chaos of the world outside, Lee is pursued by a new threat: someone who will stop at nothing to get what he has.

The Remaining: Aftermath is the second book in the best-selling The Remaining series.

The 2nd Book Should Have Been the First

The first book of this series was just adequate. Frankly, it could have been a prologue to this book. But the first book had a great narrator, as this one does because they are one and the same. There was some character building and some tears in the story as well.

Yet, it is Aftermath where Molles opens the spigots and let the story flow. There is a terrific set of characters and unrelenting tension as people try to become communities with sustainable protection. While the world has changed a sense of normality and stability grew.

You don't need the first book to enjoy the second, but if you read the first book you will be happier with it after you read the second book. At least I was happier with the first after reading the second.

awesome follow-up! couldn't stop listening!

Where does The Remaining: Aftermath rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

so far, the first two books rank really high on my favorite end of the world / zombie stories. this series is definitely in my top 5.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Remaining: Aftermath?

whew! there were a few! but i can't say b/c it'd spoil other listener's experience.

Any additional comments?

this is an excellent follow-up! no sophomore slump at all!

as the story opens, lee has to prove he is what he says he is- someone who truly wants to help. lee and those volunteering to help him must find some gas so they can make it to one of his bunker. i like how nothing comes easy. once again, i must mention pacing and storytelling. most authors in zombie stories brush off the act of getting gas but not d.j. mollies! he believably and realistically builds tension around the act of looking for cars with gas and siphoning it. you can feel the tension and nervousness the characters feel. i mean i felt myself being really quiet while listening to that part. i would like to thank the editor for helping d.j. know just how much time and description should be spent on the different parts of the story.

as the story progresses, we learn more about milo, and he truly is a vile psychopath. lee and milo are heading into a confrontation, but will lee's mission outweigh his feelings for milo? book 2 further develops some of the characters at camp ryder and introduces new characters. i liked the supporting characters.you know the author does a good job when you actually loathe some of the characters he introduces you to.

i must say most end of the world / zombie have a crazy christian pastor, who is usually an over the top cartoony caricature, but d.j. mollies does it correctly- a man who knows just what to say and when, not preachy at all. realistic while holding an m-4. lol

once again, the pacing of the story is superb! so far, these first two books have some of the best pacing i've listened to, and to be honest, i think that's one of the reasons why these two books have shot up my list of all time favorite end of the world / zombie stories.

talking about zombies, i really like the direction the author is taking. for once, the infected really are something to fear even with machine guns.

there is a shocking moment in this story, and i had to rewind b/c i was like what the heck just happened.

i was extremely satisfied with how this book closed, albeit a little sad, and i am looking forward to see how things progress in the 3rd book.

Almost non stop great action

Lee has to prove himself to the survivors and goes to try to recover supplies from his bunker which results in many, many twists, turns and surprises, which never seem to end. There is a tremendous amount of action but not the senseless kind. The author brings us into Lee Hardens head and shows the inner workings of how this professional soldier becomes a beast of a war machine. Because the inner personality of Lee is described you can identify strongly with the character and it doesn't become a superficial action story. You cheer when he becomes angry, thoughtful when he ponders, its almost as if you feel the pain when he gets hurt. Again, he is not perfect and suffers the consequences, reminded me of John McClane in Die Hard, all beaten and busted up.

The author and narration are just really good, everything works. This is not your trashy zombie tale, but quality work.

Great Story

What's not to like about Captain Harden a kick ass soldier in a world gone to crap. Like most zombie stories, the creatures fall back as simple background story and the real fight is between the humans. This of course is why I like the genera so much, all about survival. I look forward to continuing the series.

The character's are given depth and you will find yourself cheering some (LEE!!!!!!) and cursing others (JERRY!!!!!). The infected are becoming more of a problem

This is the second book and really this series is a whole continuous story that could have been 1 whole book but it would have been really long, the ending of the books arent something of an ending its something that you really want to read more to find out what happens next and Audible knows that so they included the first chapter to this book in the end of the first book and the 3rd book in the end of this one and so on.

if you liked book 1 then you know you will like this one, in fact you should probably just get the other 2 books since its just more of the same and if you liked that then why not.

Great Story, Even Better Narrator

So far I'm loving this series. The story is interesting and keeps you guessing. What I really love is the narration, however. Christian Rummel does a great job differentiating the voices of every character so you know exactly who's speaking, and how the characters are feeling at the time by the inflection of his voice.
