Captain Jason Burke is a man apart, and not just because he's the only of his kind for thousands of light-years in any direction. The changes to his body and to his genetic code have made him faster, stronger, more able to survive in his dangerous occupation...but they've also ensured that he'll never truly fit in with others of his species. He always assumed he would live and die with his crew and never lay eyes on another human again. He was wrong.
The mercenary captain learns through back-channel information that Earth may be in danger and, worse, that he may have been a contributing factor. He now faces the choice of ignoring the problem and allowing his own species to fight their own battles or returning to help and risk making the situation worse. Can he just sit idly by while his species faces such a dire threat?

This was like hearing from old friends again. Jason Burke is not perfect but he recognizes it. He does dumb things sometime but the reader also doesn't know what else to do so we share in it.
Most important, the voices are so good, if they ever make a movie they'll have to get Paul Heitsch to dub every part.
I've been writing software for over twenty years. Most of the books in my collection are science fiction or computer related materials.
I really enjoyed the series and while the last book felt a little like the end of the story, but, there is also several other threads the story can use to be continued. I would love to learn more about the little surprise at the end and can see this series potentially carrying on for quite a while longer! Recommended If you like space and science fiction.
I love this series it is the best sci-fi series I have ever picked up, and I love it. I cannot wait for the next one to come out and I buy it as soon as it does and I listen straight through. crazy twist at the end of this one, hope this series keeps going for a long long time to come
Wherever I go, there I am...
I don't know if I would listen to this again. However, that does not distract from the overall story. It was good. It was well written and well performed. The author kept the story moving along and flowing to a conclusion.
The character interaction and the action are what makes this series worth the read. This is NOT great literature, but it is good science fiction. If you can suspend reality for a while and overlook some plot holes and some scientific leaps of faith, this is a good effort.
Mr. Heitshch's work is superior. He does not allow the story to drag or get slow. Without much change in his voice, he still manages to convey the excitement of any particular scene. He also manages to be believable when he is speaking for any individual character.
This book, this series is not "Dune" or "Foundation Trilogy." But, for what it is, it is more than adequate. There are no moving moments here to have any great emotions about. It's just good, competent "action adventure."
I rate this 4 stars because it carries the series along nicely. If this was a stand alone book, I might have rated it less, 3 stars, maybe. However, as part of this series the best thing I can say about this book is, I am eager to read the next title in the series.
As I stated above, this is not great literature. What it is, is good entertainment and I wish the author well in his future endeavors. I recommend this book and the series.
As the series continues to grow it shows no signs of slowing down . Very enjoyable with a great performance once again . King for the day !
I have listened to every book in this series. If it is not the best ever then it is very close. I thoroughly enjoyed every character. I had a hard time putting this down. If you love space opera at its best then you will love this whole series. I surely hope Joshua Dalzelle is not finished with this series -I can't wait for the next book!!!!!!
In this book Jason has to make some very difficult dissions that in turn can either help his home world or end it. You have to listen to it to find out what happens.
Where can you go from here? I sure hope you don't retire the series, this was another great listen. Joshua Dalzelle has become one of my favorite authors, the way he melded the characters together and the storyline flows through out the entire series is wonderful,

Great work, worth the money!
"The simple story telling brilliance continues."
I've enjoyed the whole series immensely and it just gets better and better. Can't wait for the next installment and indeed for the next 10. You reading this Joshua?
