Publisher's Summary

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Earth has been invaded by a species that takes over the minds of human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves - Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, The Host is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

    "Outstanding"

This one has it all! Told from the viewpoint of an alien parasite, I documents her epiphany about her kind. Characters are convincingly developed as she develops a liking then a love for her host and human friends and associates.

There are adventure, romance, and thrills here and the tale is totally involving. Highly recommend this great listen.

    "I loved this book!"

I've already read all of Stephenie's books from the Twilight saga and liked them all specially the last one, Breaking Dawn, but by far Host is my favorite. I really, really hope there's a second book!

"One of the best I've heard"

I haven't been a member very long, but I've listened to about 6 audiobooks, and several podcasts. I really liked the reading done by Kate Reading. She uses different inflections for different characters, which really enhanced my listening pleasure, imbibing their voices with the characteristics described in the narrative, and helping flesh out the picture in my head.

I'm currently 2/3 of the way through, and sad that I'm on the downward leg of the journey, as it's so good I don't want it to end. But I'll be looking for another read by Kate for my next one!

    "Good Book"

I really liked this book. It was very well written and had an interesting story. I had a hard time putting it down. I also thought the narrator did a great job reading it.

    "Worst Ever"

This is one of the worst books I have ever read. I only finished it to see if it got any better but it didn't. Don't waste your time or money.

    "Very slow paced book"
What could Stephenie Meyer have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I felt that The Host was very slow moving and boring in the beginning. An editor should have gone in a cut this book in half and nothing would have been missing from the story.

Would you be willing to try another one of Kate Reading’s performances?

No. Kate's voice was very off putting to me and if a future book is read my her I will read the book instead of getting the audio book.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Host?

The majority of the first half of the book could be cut out.

    Any additional comments?

Just because you are a fan of Twilight does not mean you will like this book. (I loved Twilight)

"I can't believe it took me this long!!"

I had no idea the book was even out there until the movie previews. I just didn't go searching through Meyer's book looking for something so note worthy. I have a respect for the author I didn't have before. Do not "categorize" her just as a teen romance writer.

The book is totally unexpected, right out of the invaders side of the story instead of just the human side and point of view. It gives you a real feel of what hope really could be if we lived in their world and ours. Redefines what kindness and self-sacrifice is.

Amazing book. Totally loved it and the narrator hit a home run with me!

    "Fantastic!"
What made the experience of listening to The Host the most enjoyable?

The narration was perfect, the story was engrossing, thoughtful, touching, funny.. extremely well written.. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was a little hesitant, due to the poor reviews over the writing of the vampire books, but this was exceptional.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I truely enjoyed the Uncle, and his gruf character. I felt compassion for Doc, who was obviously troubled by some of the things he had to do.

    Which scene was your favorite?

no one favorite. I did, however, think the ending was specacular. When you're way into a good book like this, you think.. how on earth are they going to end this properly... I get nervous and sometimes don't want to finish for fear of disappointment. I was not disappointed!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Jody was unable to be revived and the soul was put back into her.. it was such a minor part of the book, but so sweet.

    Any additional comments?

After reading the book, I will avoid the movie like a plague. There is no way it can enhance anything.
