Editorial reviews

Editors Select, June 2014 - All I knew going into M.R. Carey's The Girl with All the Gifts was that it is a zombie novel centered around a special, enigmatic little girl named Melanie. Now that I've finished, I have a dilemma — I want to convince everyone I know to listen to it, but I don't want to give a single thing away. What I will say is this: The Girl with All the Gifts is one of the most imaginative, original, and deeply human takes on the zombie genre I have ever encountered in any form. It's definitely a thriller in the true sense of the word: every time I thought I knew where the story was going, Carey completely changed the game, and there were plenty of those harrowing, suspenseful scenes that make the genre so irresistible. But what made this story truly unique were the characters — multidimensional, believable, and sympathetic personalities that stayed with me long after the story was over. If you like zombie fiction, or just great, smart thrillers, make this your next listen. And don't dare let anyone spoil the ending for you. Sam, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

In the ruins of civilization, a young girl's kindness and capacity for love will either save humanity - or wipe it out in this USA Today best-selling thriller Joss Whedon calls "heartfelt, remorseless, and painfully human."

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr. Caldwell calls her "our little genius."

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointed at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh.

I Just Never Got Into It

What would have made The Girl with All the Gifts better?

I don't really know why, but this book just never caught my attention. I think perhaps the subject is just not something I'm interested in.

What was most disappointing about M. R. Carey’s story?

It just seemed to go on and on with no apparent direction.

What aspect of Finty Williams’s performance would you have changed?

Not sure.

Zombies go to school

I don’t even know how I ended up with this book. Not a fan of zombies. I liked the little girl because she was sort of a high IQ zombie and I liked her teacher because she was a decent human being with emotions. Then school ended, everyone was out in the world, and zombies were everywhere.

It does have an interesting idea about the future of zombies in a zombie laden world. It would be a big spoiler to go into it. I would say that if you like zombies, you would love this book.

Fantastic Twists and Angles.

Love it from the word go, and rarely stopped listening until I was finished.
And this stuff is not my preferred genre! Ever.

Finally- a new kind of apocalypse novel!

Apocalypse novels are all the rage at the moment, and I usually don't go down that rabbit hole. This novel, however, has thoroughly developed characters and takes a new spin on the traditional zombie novel with a carefully orchestrated depth of its characters. I enjoyed seeing the characters reveal their pasts, develop emotionally, and react to unthinkable circumstances as the novel progressed. The plot was unpredictable yet thoroughly believable; the author really thought out every nuance. The ending.... oh, just wait till the ending...

Neat concept and well rounded characters

overall it was an interesting read along the zombie genre but with a unique twist. I enjoyed the book although there were a few draggy points.

Wow I didn't see that coming

Creepy and entertaining
Loved this audiobook I couldn't stop listening. The ending was a unexpected and dreadfully cruel, but not for the girl with all the gifts.

Well-paced zombie post-apocalyptic

Any additional comments?

"The Girl with All the Gifts," has a linear plot line - making it an easy listen - no flashbacks that make you think you might have missed something. The mood of this book has a Margaret Atwood feel and I definitely want to read more from this author.

great to last word.
(but that's 4 words).

I will never forget how it ended.

What does Finty Williams bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Finty did a good job moving from one thing to the next.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Don't assume anything
