Publisher's summary

With unforgettable characters, a sweeping backdrop, and passionate storytelling, this is a fantasy debut to rival that of Robert Jordan. Filled with adventure and bloodshed, pageantry and piracy, mystery and menace, Assassin's Apprentice is the story of a royal house and the young man who is destined to chart its course through tempests of change. Young Fitz is the bastard son of the noble Prince Chivalry, raised in the shadow of the royal household by his father's gruff stableman. An outcast whose existence has forced his father to abdicate his claim on the throne, Fitz is ignored by all royalty except the devious King Shrewd, who has him secretly tutored in the arts of the assassin. For in the young man's blood is a heritage of magic, the talent called the Skill, as well as another, even more mysterious ability.

As barbarous raiders ravage the coasts and leave behind the zombie-like husks of the townspeople to prowl the countryside, Fitz is growing toward manhood. Soon he will face his first dangerous, soul-shattering mission, a mission that poses as much a threat to himself as it does for his target---for Fitz is a threat to the throne...but he may also be the key to the survival of the kingdom.

Critic reviews

“Intriguing, controlled, and remarkably assured...at once satisfyingly self-contained yet leaving plenty of scope for future extensions and embellishments.” ( Kirkus)

A very well written fantasy novel

Recently I got into a discussion with a co-worker about the best fantasy novel ever written. I said Rothfusses Name of the Wind or Renshaws Dawn of Wonder or Sandersons the Way of Kings. The person I was talking with had not read any of these. But being a well read fantasy genre connoisseur, he said Lord of the Rings or Assassins Apprentice. Well... I had read a couple of Hobb's Ship books and enjoyed them very much. So I thought I would give this a shot and see if it lived up to his opinion. In a word I would say yes.

While not the all time single greatest fantasy story ever, this is damnably good. The plot is not one where the hero is saving the world with super human powers, instead its of a young man who has deep faults foiling the conniving desires of others greed. The main character is sound, the writing is very good for this genre, and the world building is exceptionally detailed for what it is.

Well worth the credit.

Epic Fantasy

Assassin's Apprentice is the first book of Robin Hobb and her Farseer novels, and book 1 of the Fitz and the Fool trilogy. This was a well-written, complex adult epic fantasy. It does not have a YA feel about it. Solid world-building and fascinating magical concepts. It reads a little slow, with lots of greed, politics, court intrigue, and injustice. I would have enjoyed a bit of humor. I listened to the audio version and the narration by Paul Boehmer was solid. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars. Intending to read more.

weaving a tale

this is not a story of calm and crisis. Where you go along until there is a major sword fight and the hero wins. this is a tale of a life in a place- and how the days go and the the boy grows. I really enjoyed it. The logic of it, the people i watched - the wending of it. On my way to book 2.
