Publisher's summary

In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers…someone had to do their dirty work for them, their fighting and dying.

I, James McGill, was born in 2099 on the fringe of the galaxy. When Hegemony Financial denied my loan applications, I was kicked out of the university and I turned to the stars. My first campaign involved the invasion of a mineral-rich planet called Cancri-9, better known as Steel World. The attack didn't go well, and now Earth has entered a grim struggle for survival. Humanity's mercenary legions go to war in Steel World, best-selling author B. V. Larson's latest science fiction novel.

I'm still shocked at how much I enjoyed this

I bought this because of the excellent ratings. It turned out to be an incredible guilty pleasure. I feel like the book was written with a man from the south who loves guns, god and country. I'm from California, and I don't even really like holding sharp knives. I can't really put my finger on why I enjoyed hearing this story about a womanizing jerk who stumbles into situations that far exceed his expertise. But I did like it. And I liked it so much that I bought the sequel as soon as the first book was done. It might not be for everyone. I would have thought it wasn't for me. But here I am giving it a five-star review.

Great story, not so great narrator.

The book itself was great but it was tough getting through while listening to Boyett. His voice acting for female characters makes them sound like helpless, soft voiced, innocent girls. This is a story containing gore and violence. These females are part of an intergalactic army. They should not sound like innocent girls. On the other hand, male voices are done well. Overall the book is a great listen if you can get past Boyett's voice acting. There's a good story behind it all.

Shallow characters but nice escape into fantasy

The story and details are nice. the characters are shallow. Typical military personalities with no background. Aliens are either strange or reptilian. Feels very stale.

When the action starts, it move fast.

Think Starship Troopers, with more violent action, too close calls and scorekeepers. Well thought out characters, and a plot twist at the end to Cary on the story.

Reliably good

It's hard to pick if the story or narration is better. Having attended the Naval Academy there are definitely genuine parallels between the fictional and the real. You should never volunteer, but the ones at the head of the class always do.
