Publisher's summary

It began as the ultimate voyage of discovery - only to become the stuff of lost Republic legend...and a dark chapter in Jedi history. Now, at last, acclaimed author Timothy Zahn returns to tell the whole extraordinary story of the remarkable - and doomed - Outbound Flight Project.

The Clone Wars have yet to erupt when Jedi Master Jorus C'baoth petitions the Senate for support of a singularly ambitious undertaking. Six Jedi Masters, 12 Jedi Knights, and 50,000 men, women, and children, will embark - aboard a gargantuan vessel, equipped for years of travel - on a mission to contact intelligent life and colonize undiscovered worlds beyond the known galaxy. The government bureaucracy threatens to scuttle the expedition before it can even start - until Master C’baoth foils a murderous conspiracy plot, winning him the political capital he needs to set in motion the dream of Outbound Flight.

Or so it would seem. For unknown to the famed Jedi Master, successful launch of the mission is secretly being orchestrated by an unlikely ally: the evil Sith Lord Darth Sidious, who has his own reasons for wanting Outbound Flight to move forward...and, ultimately, to fail.

Yet Darth Sidious is not the mission's most dangerous challenge. Once underway, the starship crosses paths at the edge of Unknown Space with the forces of the alien Chiss Ascendancy and the brilliant mastermind best known as “Thrawn”. Even Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, aboard Outbound Flight with his young Padawan student, Anakin Skywalker, cannot help avert disaster. Thus what begins as a peaceful Jedi mission is violently transformed into an all-out war for survival against staggering odds and the most diabolical of adversaries.

Timothy Zahn's unique mix of espionage, political gamesmanship, and deadly interstellar combat breathes electrifying life into a Star Wars legend.

thrawn fanatic (SPOILER ALERT)

oooooohkay so I read Outbound Flight last.. after heir to the empire, imperial, & ascendancy trilogies. This is like finally finding a missing puzzle piece.
More than anything I would recommend reading/listening to this novel before reading the imperial & ascendancy trilogies.

Outbound Flight abridged without cliff notes

I’m sorry just feel like I got rip off, but ever since I downloaded the app I have enjoyed my purchases. I just wish it was advertised as an abridged version. Just truly wish Audible release more unabridged version of Star Wars books.

Better than I was Expecting

I wasn't expecting this to be a Thrawn book but it is! I enjoyed it so much that I finished it in less than a week. Outbound Flight is yet another example of why the Jedi fell the way they did. actively seeking out force sensitive people and taking them by force. Obi Wan stops 1 attempt but is taken away by Palpatine before he continues in Outbound Flight's mission as he knew Anakin was aboard. Thrawn finds his way into this mess (as always) through compete randomness. He reworks Droid software to serve his purposes but encounters the rage of a Jedi for the first time. Acting quickly, another character uses bombs to disable the ship. As usual Thrawn gets in trouble politically but manages to keep the Ship out of the wrong hands.

Great back story of Thrawn and C'Baoth!

After reading the Thrawn Trilogy, this was an excellent follow-up story. I only wish and hope a sequel is made. The questions it doesn't answer for me are: How does Thrawn get recruited into the Empire? Who made the clone of C'Baoth later on? Other than these burning questions, this was a thrilling story with great character development - naturally, it's a Zahn book ;)

Pretty Good

I usually hate abridged books, but Timothy Zahn is a magician. If you like his work, I would recommend this book. If you haven't read the Thrawn Trilogy, it would still be good, but it's better if you have.
