I love that Kate Mulgrew narrated this book. It adds so much depth to the reading. The story was enjoyable and I always wanted to hear more.
I have to admit that Voyager wasn't my favorite Star Trek and Janeway wasn't even my favorite Captain. But maybe I've made a mistake.
I found this story engaging and engrossing. I cared about all the characters and I dearly wish that it had been longer.
I have no doubt I will re-listen to this book and I will buy more books narrated by Kate. She has a natural style that was very appealing. It's also obvious that she cares about the material in the loving way she gives passion to her reading.
Bravo Kate, and thank you.
Only Kate Mulgrew could have done this book justice. She IS Captain Janeway, as surely as William Shatner IS Captain Kirk... Everything about her narration of this story was delightful: pacing, inflections, and emotion were all spot on.
The story itself has three main threads running through it: milestones and character shaping events in Janeway's life, Tuvok and an away team stranded on a planet, and Voyager battling with the Kazon over said planet.
I most enjoyed the bits about Janeway's life. Kate Mulgrew really brings the young Katherine to life - you feel like you are there with her in her early life. The threads involving Tuvok, Kes, Harry, etc seemed to suffer somewhat from abridgement. Overall I wasn't terrifically interested in the these two other threads. There is one point where some Kazon meet a very gruesome end that I thought was unnecessarily grotesque and overdone. Fortunately this portion is brief. Overall, a most excellent and enjoyable listen. I really felt that the Janeway portions added a great deal of dimension to the character.
To say that this Star Trek story was merely good would be an understatement. It is one of the best stories to be written by Jeri Taylor. This Novel provides a look into the soul of Captain Janeway. I for one found this book engaging and poignant. A good audio book if I ever heard one.
I read mostly science fiction. My guilty pleasure is Star Trek although I do not listen to much since it is abridged.
I gave this only three stars not because of the story but because of the abridgment. Story is great and you learn much about Janeway. I just really dislike abridgments, I wish all the Star Trek book were not like this.
I loved it. I would listen to Kate Mulgrew read war and peace or Wuthering heights, or tale of two cities, or treasure island page for page, verbatim without hesitation. I'd sit through a four hour long lecture without a break about astrophysics if she was giving it and I don't even know what that is exactly.
She brings it to life, her intonation and inflection were perfect. Even if I weren't a Voyager fan and a Kate fan, I'd still have listened to it. Its worth every cent.
A busy mum who doesnt find much time to read, however the beauty of ebooks is that i can listen while i drive or walk or am on my treadmill to name a few :) awesome!!
it explained a lot of things, matching the Voyager experience, I found it a very good read
kept to the story line
narrator Kate Mulgrew made it sound very authentic and as if I was there in the story...loved it
I would have loved more of it....
Busy mom and "Nana" so love the audiobooks so I can keep hands free for multi-tasking. Originally from So. Calif., living in Montana.
I really enjoyed the start of this book and thought it was going somewhere exciting, but the author goes back in time to a character's past ever other chapter so it is hard to stay with the story. I love Mulgrew's reading and yes, she is Janeway, but this book is not only short, it is putting me to sleep. By the way, why don't they do unabridged versions of these stories? They deserve the full treatment.
I was thrilled when I found a ST:VOY audio. The story was good, interesting and fun. I hope there are more...
But the highlight was Kate Mulgrew narrating. She was fabulous and it made the story much more realistic!! Keep them coming Jeri!!
I loved the insight into Janeway's past, to show the person beyond the 'Starfleet Captain'. Janeway has always been my favourite character and I found after listening to this book that I loved her even more. It was particularly amazed that Kate Mulgrew herself narrated this book which is what held my fascination to the story, and I loved the subtle way she changed her tone of voice to change with the characters, it was well suited. I liked that it wasn't just a novel entirely about Janeway's past but floated back and forth between the action of the plot so it always had me wanting to know what was coming next. I would highly recommend this.
