Critic reviews

“I read this book in a state of wonder, not just for the author’s gifts as a nuanced storyteller and sharp observer, but for those other remarkable gifts, of intelligence, sensitivity, wit, intuition, self-awareness, and élan that were bestowed on him when he came into the world—all of which he has freely shared with us so long and so beautifully; and finished reading in a state of deep gratitude for the gifts, and the gift, of Patrick Stewart.” —Michael Chabon

“Patrick’s early life is a Dickensian tale of domestic violence and misfortune, transformed by chance and some good folk into the actor internationally admired and loved. He writes as well as he acts, with insight, truth, and passion. Another Stewart Triumph!” —Sir Ian McKellen

“There is so much to say about Sir Patrick. He is an amazing actor, great to look at, really funny, and up for anything. He is a kind man…compassionate and sensitive….but, as you will find when you read the book, his greatest asset as a human being is the fact that he is so completely and unapologetically himself.” —Whoopi Goldberg

Wonderful and immortalized

I’m having a hard time coming up with the right words to describe how I’ve felt for the last 18 hrs drinking in this story. But it wasn’t so much a story it felt almost like I was just sitting with Sir Patrick and him just saying ‘did I ever tell you the time…’. Listening to this story was like having a private conversation with him where I didn’t have to say anything, just enjoy him being him.

I wish there was more and honestly has me hoping other memoirs are just as engaging and beautiful.

I hope he finds the passion and energy from doing this audiobook (and writing) to do additional work in this medium. His voice has been the narrator in my head for some time now listening and I have a feeling will be for a long time after.

Captain, Sir, May I Speak Candidly?

Great job of telling a very detailed life story. Enjoyable anecdotes about Star Trek: TNG. The final season of Picard earlier this year was some of the best Star Trek ever filmed, coming after some of the worst (Picard S1 and S2), so the author is riding the crest of a wave right now. He speaks with modesty about his fraught journey to land the role of the Captain in Gene Roddenberry's 1980s Star Trek sequel series, and it's clear that the august, deeply human character who became legendary in short order means a lot to the man who gave him life and took the Star Trek franchise to new levels of high quality. Some of the stories P.S. tells are interesting just because they are shockingly prosaic, considering the respect the world feels for the actor. Sincere and lively narration, absolutely fitting after Jean-Luc's series ended with a bang (don't miss season 3!). This man might be the world's best living actor. And this is a fine voyage to take alongside him.

Wonderful story told by a wonderful man

This was a very open and honest rendering of his life, which included the good, the bad, and the ugly. He sounds like a loving grandfather as he reads it to you. I’ve had the privilege to meet Patrick Stewart 4 times through various photo opportunities and autograph sessions and every time this man was gracious, courteous, and humble. The world is a better place with him in it. Thank you for this wonderful glimpse into your life.

Amazing Life of an Amazing Man

I loved hearing Sir Patrick Stewart's life story. I now understand that his acting spoke to me because he pulls from the life he has pulled pieces of his life/other people into the roles he plays. So much of his life is relatable, and so much he has to teach us from what he has learned. That is, on and off the stage. And, Sir Patrick, I want to add that your voice is still great. I hope to sound as Eliquent as you in the years to come.

Absolutely brilliant

Love that Sir Patrick Stewart reads his own biography. He is such a talented thespian and I adore him. When he did Shakespeare readings during the pandemic it was so kind and wonderful. Great book. Highly recommended.
